We're excited to announce two new small groups are starting at The Brain Arcade™ for ages 5 to 11.

Social Club helps kids who want friends but don’t know how to join in. Calm Crew helps kids whose big feelings turn into meltdowns. In both groups, kids learn one skill a week, then practice it during games with up to 8 kids and two Registered Behavior Technicians.

Groups meet in Nocatee and Jacksonville starting the week of October 19, and registration closes October 16.

"He's doing fine now that he's on medication."

Parents hear that and think it as a reason not to ask for a 504 plan. It isn't one. A child who's doing well because something is working can still qualify, and medication, behavior therapy, etc. are all part of what's working.

If the emails and the conference haven't moved anything six weeks in, a written request is worth more than another conversation.

The post covers who qualifies, what to bring so the team hears where your child does well alongside where they need room, and how to get accommodations written clearly enough that a teacher can follow them in the middle of a class period. "Extra time as needed" doesn't get used. "Time and a half on written tests, arranged at the start of the period" does.

Fall conference slots run about fifteen minutes, sometimes ten, and your child's teacher may be on their eleventh conversation of the evening.

Left to run on its own, the time fills up with the gradebook. You hear the numbers, everyone is warm about it, and nothing gets decided.

Three things change that. A short note a few days ahead naming the one thing you want to cover. An opening question about what's already working. And a summary email that same night with what you agreed and who's doing what.
