Apparently my sewing room has wheels this fall. 😂
It's another travel week for Sew Wise Quilter!
This week I'm trading my regular workspace for a classroom in Indiana, where I'll be teaching Twinkling Stars at Zig Zag Corner Quilts.
And while packing for a quilting trip involves the usual clothes and toiletries, there's also the important stuff:
✔️ Samples
✔️ Teaching supplies
✔️ Patterns
✔️ Approximately 47 things I'm convinced I'll desperately need 😂
✔️ And it all has to fit in my backpack! (JK)
One thing I love about traveling to teach is meeting quilters outside my own little corner of the world. Different classrooms, different personalities, different questions—and somehow we all speak the same quilting language. ❤️

That ¼″ seam gets blamed for an awful lot. 😂
Yes, an inaccurate seam allowance can cause problems—but it isn't the only reason points don't match.
Cutting accuracy, pressing, unit construction, alignment and even small inconsistencies earlier in the process can all show up when it's time to put everything together.
That's why I teach my students to look at the whole process instead of immediately blaming the seam.
And it's another reason we practice techniques more than once. The more familiar you become with the process, the easier it is to recognize where something went sideways—and how to fix it.
We're not chasing perfection.
We're building understanding. ❤️

What does teaching at a quilting retreat look like?

Sometimes it's standing in front of the whole room demonstrating a technique.

But more often, it's pulling up a chair beside someone and saying, “Okay, let's look at this together.” ❤️

It's answering questions, demonstrating it one more time, celebrating when it clicks, and helping someone understand why something works — not just how to do it.

That's the part of teaching I love.

Because we're not just learning how to use a tool.

We're building confident quilters. 🧵

You don't have to know everything to be “good” at quilting. ❤️

You can have quilted for twenty years and still learn a better way to press something.

You can teach quilting and still discover a technique that makes you say, “Well, why haven't I been doing THAT?” 😂

You can be really good at one technique and completely intimidated by another.

Being experienced doesn't mean you're finished learning.

It means you have more experience to build from.

So try the block. Take the class. Ask the question.

Stay curious.

That's where the fun is.

Behind the Teaching

I want something different from BlockBuster this Thursday. Take a real picture of your Senior Year prep—notes, fabric, lesson plans, samples, whatever is genuinely sitting in front of you.

The class might be a couple of hours.
The preparation definitely isn't. 😂

This is the part of teaching you don't always see.

Before I teach a technique, I've worked through it, made notes, thought about where someone might get stuck, and figured out how I can explain it in a way that makes sense.

Because my goal isn't for you to watch me make something.

My goal is for YOU to leave knowing you can make it.

In fact, I think the better we get, the more we understand why the basics matter.

Accurate cutting. Good pressing. Knowing where your points need to land. Understanding what a unit should look like before you put it into the block.

Those aren't “beginner skills.”

They're quilting skills. ❤️

And this is exactly why we've intentionally built review and finished projects into our education programs.

I don't want my students to use a tool once in class, put it away, and six months later think, “Now...how did I do that again?” 😂

We come back to those skills. We use them in new combinations. We put them into actual projects. And each time, they become a little more familiar and a little more natural.

Because the goal isn't simply to learn how to use a tool.

The goal is to master the technique well enough that you have the confidence to use it again and again.

That's what we're doing as we move from Freshman to Sophomore to Junior—and now into Senior Year. 🎓

We aren't leaving those earlier lessons behind.

We're building on them.

Home from Montana with a full heart...and a head FULL of ideas. ❤️

Quilt shows always do that to me.

I go thinking about what I need to bring, what needs to be displayed, and whether we've remembered everything. 😂

But I come home thinking about people.

The conversations. The questions. The quilts. The ideas that start with, “What if I tried...?”

Thank you to everyone who stopped to visit with us at the Flathead Quilt Show. You reminded me all over again why I love teaching.

And the timing couldn't be better because tomorrow...

Senior Year begins. 🎓

Sew Wise has hit the road! 🚗❤️

Yesterday was BlockBuster reveal day, and today the quilting adventure continues from Kalispell, Montana!

Melanie and I are here for the Flathead Quilt Guild Show, and after all the cutting, prepping, planning and “Did I remember to bring...?” moments, it feels pretty darn good to finally be here. 😂

If you're at the show, come find us and say hello!

Ask questions. Talk quilting. Show me what you're working on. And if there's a technique you've been struggling with, you KNOW I love a good quilting problem to solve.

That's my favorite part of doing these shows—the people. ❤️
