One thing I really hate
Is seeing people suffer, especially at end of life.
And another thing that boils my blood…
When people’s end of life choices are taken away from them.
Now I can’t say for sure if this particular patient would’ve chosen differently for themself. They were so chronically ill, they couldn’t speak anymore. But also, when they came in, they were close to death.
But what I CAN say…
No one updated this person’s end of life documents for 12 years! This patient had been getting sicker and sicker, and it appeared that no one spent the time finding out what they wanted their end of life to look like.
Maybe they did want to go on the ventilator. Or maybe they didn’t. We won’t know.
All I can say is that it was a truly heartbreaking situation.
It doesn’t have to be like that!
First, you need to talk to your loved ones about THEIR wishes. But beyond that, you need to keep the conversation fresh.
Things change. Diseases change. Diagnoses change. Situations change. Wishes change.
Talking about death once isn’t good enough.
