Stellwagen Education Foundation

Stellwagen Education Foundation Ensuring that children experience marine wildlife in their local habitat, based in the protected marine sanctuary of Stellwagen Bank.

We hope to foster an understanding of the vital role that whales play in our ocean so we may enjoy, inspire, and protect!

Footage from our afternoon trip in Stellwagen Bank offers just a small demonstration of the absolute BREACH FEST we experienced!
3 humpbacks flipper slapping, tail breaching, and launching themselves out of the water - we suspect the windy weather and extra energy in the top layers of water encouraged the whales to bust a move!

After today’s morning whale watch, a boy about 7 years old stepped off the vessel and approached naturalist Lindsay on the wharf.
“That was the best four hours of my life,” he said, with a smile. To which the neighboring passengers coming back to dry land agreed, that it was indeed a wonderful day at sea!

We are happy to hear that young people value the time they spend with whales. Stellwagen Education Foundation is dedicated to giving that opportunity to those that might never get the chance to see how big the ocean is around them, to hear the breath of a whale as it ascends to the surface, to smell the salt air, and to learn about the ecosystem with which we are all so deeply connected.
⬇️ 🐋 Here’s a clip from today’s trip. 🎧🐳 SOUND ON!!
⛴️👀 And follow along as we prepare to soon host the first cohort of what we hope are many more to join us on the water, in the pursuit of enjoying some of the best four hours of their life.

More footage from yesterday’s trip with Pleats and her 2026 calf - this little one used our vessel as a springboard to play in the waves! (Boat was idle, engines out of gear per Whale SENSE guidelines)

Thanks so much for joining us on this incredible trip! We’d love to see your pics and photos of Pleats and her energetic baby!

👀📸 First looks at the incredible female SURVIVOR Pleats the humpback whale (note the propellor scars on her head and side, long ago healed!) and her 2026 calf who have just “mugged” our vessel! Wait til you see what this little calf did! Coming soon…

Phenomenal pictures by Picture This by Kate May Photography on yesterday’s PM trip of our incredible encounter with a leatherback sea turtle in Cape Cod Bay!

We can’t hold back! It’s a leatherback sea turtle! We caught this on our our way into Cape Cod Bay area chowing down on a lion’s mane jellyfish! 🪼🪼🪼🐢 (see the comments with a second vid of the jellyfish in the mouth)

We host some of nature’s most fascinating creatures off the coast of Massachusetts. What have you seen out there recently?
