**Humanities Sequence: Ancient Greek Legends & Lore (Fall 2027) + Understanding the Holocaust (Spring 2028)**
**Grades 8–12 | Earn up to 1 History Credit and 1 English Literature Credit**
These two semester-long courses may be taken together as a full-year humanities sequence, allowing students to earn credits in both History and English Literature while exploring some of the most influential stories, ideas, and events in human history through a Christian worldview.
**Ancient Greek Legends & Lore (Fall)** introduces students to the myths, epics, tragedies, poetry, and historical writings of ancient Greece. Through works such as *Mythology*, *The Odyssey*, and *Antigone*, students will examine Greek ideas about heroism, justice, virtue, and the gods, comparing them with biblical truth and tracing their lasting influence on Western culture and literature.
**Understanding the Holocaust (Spring)** combines historical study with powerful works of literature, including *Night*, *The Book Thief*, and *Maus I & II*. Students will explore the causes, events, and legacy of the Holocaust while examining themes of identity, courage, moral responsibility, justice, and memory through historical sources, survivor testimony, and literary analysis.
Together, these courses help students develop strong reading, writing, discussion, and critical-thinking skills while earning the History and English credits needed for high school graduation. As we approach Memorial Day, we pause to remember the true meaning behind the day. Memorial Day is a solemn time set aside to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Unlike Veterans Day, which recognizes all who have served, Memorial Day specifically remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Originally known as “Decoration Day” following the Civil War, communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and wreaths as an expression of gratitude and remembrance. Today, many families continue this tradition by visiting cemeteries and memorials, flying the American flag at half-staff until noon, and participating in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m.
As Christian homeschool families, we are grateful for the freedoms we enjoy and mindful of the cost at which they came. May we take time this weekend to pray for military families, reflect on the sacrifices made for our nation, and teach our children the importance of honor, gratitude, and service to others
