This is a great dialogue on Sun, Sep 8, 2019, between Fareed Zakaria (CNN) and General Jim Mattis (Former Secretary of Defense) on the importance of continuous learning by leaders.

Zakaria:

You have said that if someone in a leadership position has not read hundreds of books, that person is functionally illiterate. Explain why…

Mattis:

Life is too short and leadership roles too short, sometimes as short as 2, 3, 5 years in a corporation, a country, a political system or military unit. Life is just too short to learn everything you need based on your own experience.

You’re going to have to sharpen yourself and many of the best ideas I’ve gotten were recovered from old books. Those were great new ideas I thought when I employed them. But they were all out of old books.

I'm not here to say that there’s only one way to lead. Everyone's got to lead in their own way, but I would say you have to have curiosity about life. You need to have a thirst for learning. You have to be committed to your own development if you're going to be a leader.

This is true, I think, in any competitive walk of life. It’s true about football coaches, and football players. It’s true about business leaders. It’s certainly true about political and military leaders…

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” (John C . Maxwell)
Knows the way: Leaders must have expertise, but that's not enough. The leader must know themselves, their strengths and weaknesses and still have a high level of self regard.
Goes the way: The leader earns the credibility and confidence of their team by walking the talk.
Shows the way: They engage with their team across the 360 degrees of work, personal, and family objectives.
Ascendent Leadership offers custom workshops and the Hogan family of assessments to help you develop your leaders.

As advisors, we use questions and dialogue to help our clients develop greater clarity on both current state and future state. By doing so, we earn their trust. That trust gives us permission, later, to help them inform, or even challenge, their vision. Once their vision is clear, they might let us help them evaluate a number of possible paths forward, including that offered by our solution.

If you are looking for a proven consultant in personal branding, read the article and give her a call or mail. 2) Her article is found on a blog site managed by William Aruda, founder of Reach Personal Branding.
