If you have to ask if it's appropriateโ€ฆ it's not.

That's the title. It's also the single most useful sentence I know about professional life โ€” and today the whole book is live. ๐Ÿ“—

Every workplace runs on rules nobody wrote down. Who to copy. When to push. What "let's take this offline" really means. The people who rise fast aren't smarter than you โ€” they just got the playbook earlier.

So I wrote it down. Twenty years inside a global consultancy, a decade leading teams, and years since coaching people through those same rooms. Scripts, boundaries, comebacks, and the unwritten rules โ€” finally written.

It's for the one who's been told to smile more. Mistaken for the intern. Working twice as hard to be seen as half as capable. You're not bad at your job. You were never handed the rules.

Your career doesn't happen in your performance review. It happens in rooms โ€” the meeting, the interview, the off-site dinner, the Slack thread you weren't technically part of.

Every one of them is running the same calculation about you. You can leave it to chance, or you can work it on purpose.

Forty chapters on working it on purpose. Out Friday: July 31st!

Mister Rogers said: you are special, exactly as you are. ๐Ÿฉถ

The Housewives said: and don't you forget it.

I wrote a whole book arguing that both of them were right โ€” and that we only ever let women have the first one.

Be worthy. Be lovely. Be enough. Absolutely, please, yes.

But want things out loud? Name a number? Say "I want the power and the money and I want them both" on television, in a tagline, at the top of every episode?

Tacky. Too much. Who does she think she is.

Twenty years. A dozen cities. Hundreds of women naming what they wanted on camera โ€” and we filed it under guilty pleasure instead of what it actually is: the most complete record of female ambition we have.

It was never a guilty pleasure. It was the text.

Everybody's telling you to keep your head down this year. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Bad advice.

When layoff decisions get made in rooms you're not in, being quiet doesn't make you safe โ€” it makes you forgettable. Visibility is your career insurance. Especially now.

Do these this week (all free):

1) Friday wins email to your manager
2) Say the idea IN the room, not after
3) Put your name on the work you already did

Save this for your next 1:1. Send it to the friend who's been "keeping their head down." ๐Ÿ’ฌ

The TikTok move where you fake-type and book fake meetings so you look too busy to fire? It has a name: task masking. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

I get the fear โ€” it's a brutal year for cuts. But this isn't the job security you think it is.

Looking busy has never been easier to automate. AI writes the update, fills the deck, clears the queue. What it can't fake โ€” being the person a decision depends on.

Use the tool. Stay the talent. Put your name on your work, out loud, on purpose.

Save this before your next 1:1. Send it to your favorite quiet genius who never takes the credit.

Twenty years of these women on in the background. Not as a joke. Just as the truth.

They were on for the career that stalled out. The friendship that ended and never got explained. All the ordinary disappointments that don't make a highlight reel.

So I wrote a book about it. Then I sent a cold email to someone who's actually in the room โ€” and he wrote back.

That's the whole story. And it's enough to keep going.

"What do the Real Housewives and Mister Rogers have in common?" ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ’›

Everything. That's the whole book.

Real Housewives nerve. Mister Rogers heart.

We hand women a rigged menu: warm = pushover, firm = difficult. So we audition for "likeable" and call it professionalism.

But the women who actually run things? A Housewife will love you hard AND tell you where the line is. Mister Rogers was the gentlest man on TV and never let anyone say kindness didn't matter.

Kindest person in the room. Least movable. Run both at full volume.

AI is coming for your busywork. Good. Let it. ๐Ÿค–

Here's the part you need to remember...As the tasks get automated, the thing that gets you promoted is being seen making the judgment call โ€” not quietly doing the work at your desk.

The 2026 data backs it: the roles that reward judgment and leadership are growing twice as fast and paying more. Visibility isn't a nice-to-have anymore. It's the job.

Nobody promotes the work they never saw. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Save this for your next 1:1. Share it with the coworker who does everything and gets credit for nothing.

Ready to get strategic about your next move? The Clarity Session (link in bio) is 60 minutes to map it.

The dedication to my book. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿท

"For Fred Rogers, who said you are special. For the Housewives, who said: and don't you forget it."

That's the whole book in two sentences.

Fred Rogers: who you are is enough. You are special, exactly as you are.

The Housewives, on the other half we're not supposed to say out loud: and don't you forget it. Take up the space. Hold the line. Want it loudly.

Warmth without nerve gets you overlooked. Nerve without warmth gets you feared. You need both.

I wrote a book. ๐Ÿ“– It's called Make It Nice.

Yes, it's a Real Housewives reference. It's also the most serious thing I've made.

I started watching at 22 โ€” alone in Niles, Ohio, setting planograms at 2 a.m., first apartment in a retirement community. Bravo had impeccable timing. I watched Vicki run her business like the most awake person in the room, and I understood her completely.

Then there's Pittsburgh, where Mister Rogers taught me the other half: your feelings are real, and you are enough.

Two opposite teachers. One question I couldn't shake: do I have to choose between being warm and being taken seriously?

Make It Nice is my answer. Housewives as a mirror. Mister Rogers as a compass. ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“Œ Save this. Send it to the friend who watches after everyone's asleep.
