Dhirana is the University of Pittsburgh's very own Indian classical dance competition. Pitt first had the opportunity to host Laasya 2012 on its campus after Pitt Nrityamala won the honor by placing first at Laasya 2011. With strong support and attendance from the Pittsburgh community and enthusiastic involvement from Pitt students, Laasya 2012 was a resounding success. Pitt Nrityamala, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh, created Dhirana to foster community interest in Indian classical dance. This competition will provide collegiate classical dance teams with a platform to showcase their talents during a weekend experience that they will never forget.
In addition to Dhirana's focus on the arts, we work to benefit our community as well. Dhirana donates all of its ticket sales to the Birmingham Free Clinic of Pittsburgh. This clinic provides free medical care to Pittsburgh's underserved population - a tremendous feat. Over the past 7 years, Dhirana has been able to raise $60,000 for the clinic, and after our first year alone, the clinic was able to buy their first EKG machine. Our hope is to continue to increase our yearly donations to help the clinic provide more extensive care for those in need!
