Dr. and Mrs. Ryonosuke Shiono Award Scholarship
Destination: Okinawa, Japan
Research Summary: With the support of the Nationality Room scholarship, I wish to uncover women’s agentic, everyday practices in one of the Black communities in Okinawa. I study the aesthetics and representations of Okinawan and Japanese women's repurposing of Black American culture as
a challenge to racialized and gendered structures. Through archival, ethnographic research, and 'yuntaku' (talk-story), I aim to trace the creative practices through which women actively shaped the changing dynamics of race, gender, and sexuality under US occupation.
Koza X Mixtopia internship: Part of this research trip will involve an internship with the Koza X Mixtopia research center under the guidance of Dr. Ariko Ikehara. I will assist with the women and gender series, which explores the intersections of art, archives, and performance in women’s everyday lives in Teruya.

“One Hundred Thousand Welcomes “
We bid you farewell with a photo montage of the Irish countryside with music. Created by Jennie-Lynn Knox, Vice Chair of the Irish Room Committee, the video showcases her favorite photos from visiting family in Northern Ireland several years ago. Her father, James W. Knox and mother, Valerie Weber Knox, met in Ireland, married in New York, honeymooned in Washington D.C. and lived in Emsworth, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania until their death. Their ashes were scattered in the meadow at the family farm.
We look forward to a time when we can gather again in the Irish Nationality Room. As the Irish say…we wish you “a safe journey home…”
