Public Safety Message: Blue Lights or Red Lights On Personal Vehicles

Blue Lights...

In Pennsylvania, Volunteer Firefighters, EMTs, Search and Rescue Members, and Fire Police Officers are authorized to have Blue Lights on their personal vehicles to respond to Emergency Calls. If you see a vehicle with flashing Blue Lights, it is suggested that you pull over and yield to allow the vehicle to pass. These responders are responding to either the Station to get an Emergency Vehicle or to the Scene of an Emergency.

Red Lights...

In Pennsylvania, Fire Chiefs, EMS Chiefs, Rescue Chiefs, QRS Officers, and Fire Police Officers are authorized to have Red Lights and Sirens on their personal vehicles to respond to Emergency Calls and Incidents. Vehicles such as these are considered an Emergency Vehicle by State Law. As such, if you see a personal vehicle using Red Lights and a Sirens, you are required by law to treat it as you would any other Emergency Vehicle. You Must pull over to the right side of the road and yield to let the vehicle pass... this is a State Law.

Remember, when you see flashing emergency lights, it's someone responding to an Emergency. Time is of the essence... Do the right thing and yield. If our Volunteers can't make it to the Station in a timely manner the Fire Truck, Ambulance, or Rescue Unit can't make it out to the Emergency Call. If our Responders can't make it to the call it may mean the difference between Life and Death. These Responders are risking their lives for those in need... they may be responding to someone you know or love. Let's all do our part to ensure they can get to the next Emergency safer and faster and give them the right of way. Thanks for your help!
