When I was a teenager, the weight of my mental illness felt like the weight of the world. It felt like I would never get better, things would never change, and I wasn’t fit to have a good life.

To end my suffering, I decided that 23 would be my last year on Earth.

In 2018, I travelled to Chicago on a trip that ultimately changed my life in so many ways. I have a note in my phone to this day that I wrote during that trip,

“Today is the day I realize that nothing is worth killing yourself over because life has been so beautiful”

Even then, it wasn’t easy, it wasn’t a flick of a switch, but it was a start. I relapsed and attempted one more time in 2020. It was the first and only time I ever was afraid to die because of the potential of what I would loose the life I was building. That ultimately was the moment everything changed. I cannot imagine that the life I have today is mine. I’m so lucky that I’m alive, I’m so grateful for every lesson, I’m so blessed for my family, my friends, and my journey.

I’ll be 29 this year 🤍

Your sign to stay today 🌿

While you’re here today, try one of these things that helped me make life feel fuller.

• Smile for 1 minute straight even if it feels weird (there’s a science behind this!)
• Reframe a negative thought about yourself (“I have that” vs. “I deserve this”)
• Sit in silence and throw your phone far away for 5 mins or more.
• Don’t guilt yourself for doing something you enjoy

I had the wonderful honor of hosting 8 workshops over the summer through The Cleveland Freedom Project’s Social Justice Through S.T.E.A.M. Summer Program

The virtual workshop surrounded themes of identity, how to build and practice boundaries, self-affirmation/ identity work, self-care, and resulted in the Youth Mental Health First Aid certification 🧡

Slide 4️⃣: These are the affirmations that we created and repeated at the beginning and end of each workshop.

A very special thank you to the leaders of CFP for inviting me back for another year of hosting my workshops this summer and the opportunity to interact with wonderful, empowered youth 🥺

📕 I also had the amazing opportunity to work on their class legacy book “Raised In The Fire” providing editing and formatting assistance through my creative business “I Don’t Have Time For That,” which provides non-profits and community organizations with affordable assistance for creative tasks like social media, marketing, and more since 2018 (stay tuned for the new socials for that 🎨, we’re rebranding!)

You don’t have to earn care.
Water yourself as needed.
You’re meant to bloom 🌱

You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to hit a breaking point to deserve care.
Rest is not a reward, it’s a basic need.
This is your reminder: you’re allowed to slow down without guilt.

Mental Health Awareness Month started in 1949. Mental Health has always been around and isn’t for trends, branding or buzzwords — people struggle in silence everyday.

MHA Month was created to bring attention to the things we often hide: the weight, the cycles, the pain that doesn’t always have a name.

This month is about being honest and shining a spotlight. Did you know that 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 6 teens will experience mental health disorder each year?
