Self-defense is and always will be about standing up for yourself, your well-being, and/or your rights. And while these Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) aren’t directly related to self-defense
they are definitely about standing up for yourself and your rights at work and in business
So the core mindset is the same as with self-defense.

All businesses can benefit from greater equality for women. If you adopt the WEPs – you join over 2,000 other business leaders around the world who have done so. You can use these Principles to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community. Subtitled “Equality Means Business”, the Principles emphasize the business case for corporate action to promote gender equality and women's empowerment.

Here are the Principles:

1: Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality
2: Treat all women and men fairly at work – respect and support human rights and nondiscrimination
3: Ensure the health, safety and well-being of all women and men workers
4: Promote education, training and professional development for women
5: Implement enterprise development, supply chain and marketing practices that empower women
6: Promote equality through community initiatives and advocacy
7: Measure and publicly report on progress to achieve gender equality

These principles are the result of collaboration between the UN Global Compact and UN Women, and are adapted from the Calvert Women's PrinciplesÂź. They are informed by real-life business practices and input gathered from across the globe. These Principles also can inform other stakeholders, including governments, as they engage with business.ïżœ
How to participateïżœLeadership involvement is important. Invite your chief executive officer, or equivalent, to issue a CEO Statement of Support. The Statement encourages business leaders to use the seven Principles as guide posts for actions that advance and empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community. It also asks you to communicate your progress through sex-disaggregated data and other benchmarks.

An Unwanted Hug

Have you ever had someone approach you for an “unwanted hug”
at a party, in the cafeteria, in the hallway, or anywhere? Here are a couple of body movements/actions you can do to communicate your boundaries in an “un-offensive way” but it’s not your fault if people take offense, you have a right to choose who you let in your personal space. - You can pretend to be cold and keep your arms crossed
say you are feeling a little under the weather.
- Take a sharp turn toward something that is more interesting than the “unwanted hug” such as a store in a mall, a new dining hall entry, or if you see another friend who you’d like to share a hug with.
- Take a back step, pretending to see some water on the floor to divert attention from the approaching hugger.
- Just straight up pretend that you have a call coming in and keep your body position in an awkward placement to make on-coming hugs more socially awkward.
- You can even be direct
and say “I don’t give hugs to people I don’t know”
that is totally fine. If you say it with a smile and offer a handshake. And if you happen to cross your wires and get into a handshake/hug switcharoo dance just laugh about it and go about your business, you may make a great friend out of it.

Look, I am not saying to be a “non-hugger”. There are many studies that say hugs are extremely healthy when shared between friends, family members, and/or significant others. Even the people you encounter around campus who might feel justified in offering you an unwanted-hug when you feel uncomfortable doing so, usually mean well. These types of exercises can be used even in a lot of situations.

Self-Defense is so multi-dimensional. It’s sometimes not the sexiest topic of all time. Even though I’ve spent a lot of physical and mental effort training for the worst...I also believe in the power of behavior and attraction or repulsion for that matter. My goal, ultimately is to spread good vibes on a consistent basis...so check out this awesome quote by Diane Mariechild. She is the author of "Mother Wit" and Inner "DaDiane Mariechild is the author of "Mother Wit" and Inner "Dance." She leads workshops and lectures frequently on women ance." She leads workshops and lectures frequently on women and Buddhism.

Hold the door for a stranger ONLY when the following conditions are present:
- You are keenly watching and listening to your entire environment.
- You will confidently smile at your fellow “door-user” while simultaneously analyzing their person.
- You are conscious of what is going on in front of, behind you, next to you, and above you.
- One of your hands is free to grab for your phone, pepper spray, and/or car keys.
- there are ways for you to quickly escape the “transitional space” of the door frame, if need be.

OKAY LOOK
There are a million reasons that could be mentioned about why or why not to hold a door for someone. The purpose of reading and considering the above examples is simply to train your brain and senses to get back in touch with your environment and people reading skills. Who knows
you might be going to an internship/first job out of college and YOU’LL WANT TO HOLD THE DOOR
because it could the CEO so you’ll make a “networking connection”
A situation which is highly popularized on the college scene, but rarely happens BTW lol.

There is no need to play ninja 24/7 and “watch out for baddies”, but you need to decide how often you will “play ninja” based on your combined awareness of your “self” and your present environment. A little “street smarts” is a great quality and tunes you into the survival mode of your brain. SURVIVE to THRIVE.
