The cram course tends to work best for a student who knows their school material but has trouble showing it consistently on a timed test.

That might look like:

- running short on time near the end of a section;
- getting stuck on one hard question;
- making the same kind of mistake on several practice tests; or
- changing a good answer without a clear reason.

If the main issue is a large gap in foundational math or reading, I will usually recommend a longer preparation plan instead. However, you'd be surprised at the increase you can see with a focused, high-yield content review from a content-matter expert!

When students review missed questions, the useful part is often the wrong answer they chose.

Why did that answer look right?

Maybe it was too broad. Maybe it used words from the passage while missing the task. Maybe the student rushed past one important word.

Once students can name the trap, they can make a specific adjustment on the next question. That's where the score improvement comes from.

ACT English tip: shorter answers are often right when they keep the same meaning.

The test rewards clear, concise writing. If two answer choices say the same thing, the shorter one is usually stronger.

Students still need to check the sentence. A good habit is to choose the answer, then read the full sentence with that answer inserted.

ACT Math tip: when the answer choices are numbers, sometimes the fastest route is to test them.

This is especially useful when the choices are ordered. Start near the middle, plug that answer into the problem, and use the result to decide whether to move higher or lower.

This is a test-taking strategy, and students need to practice when to use it. Sometimes solving directly is still faster.
