Undergraduate students at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff are applying theoretical knowledge to real-world problems through internships under the guidance of Dr. Karleah Harris (Associate Professor in the Department of Human Sciences in the School of Agriculture Fisheries and Human Sciences) at the Intergenerational Garden located at Pine Bluff First Assembly. This hands-on experience is an integral part of their academic journey, particularly in addressing food insecurity in the community.

Thanks to a UAPB-SAFHS initiative, community members are learning how to grow, maintain and harvest crops through an intergenerational collaboration. The initiative is being led by Dr. Karleah Harris, associate professor of human development and family studies at UAPB in partnership with Pine Bluff First Assembly of God and the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Jefferson County Extension Service. The effort aims to support food security and address food deserts.

“Participants recently harvested strawberries and learned about their health benefits,” Dr. Harris said. “Grandchildren, grandparents and seniors worked together while preparing garden beds for additional crops. The great-grandchildren and grandchildren eagerly picked and ate strawberries, treating them like candy. They were all smiling and admiring the vibrant colors of the strawberries.”
