May is Older Americans Month
Connecting with friends and family is essential for older Americans overall health and well-being. The global pandemic highlighted the fact that access to connectivity is not equal across all parts of Kentucky. Work with your elected officials to ensure that no one ever experiences “digital” isolation again, especially our treasured older Kentuckians who rely on connections for social and emotional well-being.

Older Americans Month is celebrated annually in May
In many communities across Kentucky, older citizens are aging in place. Do older people in your community have access to shopping, doctors, and activities, without relying on friends and family for transportation? If your community doesn’t have public transportation or available plans, talk to city councils and local governments about ways to make it happen. Accessibility helps everyone in a community move about with dignity.

It is Older Americans Month
Many older Americans are choosing to “age in place” but common health-related issues related to physical and/or cognitive vulnerability can create challenges to stay at home, especially if living alone. Do you have older neighbors living near you? In what ways can you better support them? Get to know them. Offer to help with house or yard work. Check in on them. Give them your telephone number.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Thousands of Kentuckians struggle with mental health challenges and many suffer in silence. Mental health challenges can include daily stress, severe depression and anxiety, or thoughts about su***de. To help fellow Kentuckians, we can educate ourselves about the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges. Below are a few things to look for:
📍Disinterest in normally enjoyable activities or hobbies.
📍Excessive sleep or insomnia.
📍Preoccupation with death or serious illness.
📍Talking about death.
📍Avoidance of social gatherings or groups.
📍Missing appointments.
📍Problems focusing or recalling details.
📍Unexplainable aches or pains.
📍Putting affairs in order or giving away prized possessions.
If you or someone you know may be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis, please contact the Crisis Text Line (Text hello to 741 741) or the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255).
For more information about mental health challenges, contact your local Cooperative Extension Office.
