At the oldest Orthodox synagogue in Brooklyn, newcomers and old-timers battle for its future • Shtetl - Haredi Free Press 03/04/2024

Another great piece from Shtetl. Proud to have worked on this with Chananya Groner, who did a masterful job.

In some ways, a tale as old as the history of shuls.

Yoseph Needelman-Ruiz has written movingly about this place, about his family's involvement here, including his parents (and forces of nature) America Ruiz and Martin Needleman, and all the others who've loved this place for decades. Laura Friedenberg has been involved here as well.

On the other hand are those who appear to be doing good things in the world, such as Marcos Masri and his organization JC YES, but, as you'll see, things get complicated.

Have a read and enjoy. And as the kids say: smash that thumbs-up thingie, but not so hard so that you hurt yourself.

Congregation Beth Jacob Ohev Sholom, the last remaining non-Hasidic synagogue in Williamsburg, has become embroiled in a dispute as some congregants allege fraud and mismanagement.
