Addressing the needs of the fastest growing community in the United States — the Latino community — is vital to our national interest. Currently, over 30 percent of public school students in Ariz

AZALAS Update: A message from AZALAS Executive Director, Dr. Marvene Lobato

Friendships sometimes happen when you allow yourself to open your heart with no expectations, only gratitude.

Over a year ago, I met one of our humble, remarkable AZALAS Scholarship recipients. I met him on his campus at Arizona State University Polytechnic. There was something about his respectful, heartfelt, warm demeanor that spoke to me. I listened to my heart and found myself reaching out to him to check in periodically. You see, his family is about four hours away.

This young man is studious and in a demanding engineering program. This requires a lot of his time and energy. He is organized and prioritizes his life to ensure he stays on top of what his program requires of him.

My heart is full of gratitude that our paths have crossed. There is a 40+ year difference between us. But, when we are able to match calendars and meet, my heart is full. Our friendship continues to grow.

We met today for a quick bite and to catch up. I am so proud of my friend, and know his parents beam with pride as he completes another semester.

If you are wondering what’s the purpose of this post, well, there’s a couple reasons. First, just to remind everyone to open your heart and follow it. You may receive the gift of a new friendship like I did. Second, remember how challenging college life could be when you were in your early 20’s. If you see college students grabbing a bite to eat, offer to pay for their meal. It could be the lift they need to know that we can all help one another and someday they may pay it forward in some manner.

Thank you Christian for being a wonderful, inspiring, and thoughtful young man. I am so fortunate to have you as my friend.
