Recently I had the opportunity to ride a stretch of Route 66 in Arizona nicknamed The Sidewinder on an rental bike. This is only an 8-mile section of road, but it’s famous for the breathtaking desert views and 191 curves with narrow lanes and no guardrails.
It ends (or begins, depending which direction you’re coming from) in a quirky old western town called Oatman, where donkeys roam freely among the tourists.
The road has steep grades in some sections, rough patches in others, and you need to keep your head on a swivel for cars crossing the double yellows or sand in the corners. Oatman is often packed with people wandering aimlessly trying to pet the donkeys in the street, and not paying attention to traffic passing through.
That all can make it sound scary; I promise it isn’t!
But roads like this are a great reminder of why it’s important to stay sharp in your riding skills. One mistake could be costly.
Practicing your cornering, your slow speed maneuvering, your throttle and clutch control on steep grades, and your reaction times make roads like this feel like a cakewalk.
Have you ever been to Oatman or ridden this iconic stretch of road?
Pretty people! Pick up those feet!
I’m challenging you to practice your balance while coming to a stop, and increase your clutch and throttle confidence while pulling away from a stop. Tag me in your videos! 👠🥾👟👢
