Making the right moves in life and chess! Every week, 600 kids pull out the chess boards, shake hands, and learn how to make the right moves.

In 1990, Patrick Neely wanted to create a positive after school environment for students where critical thinking skills could be developed and respect for others was the foundation.

27 years and counting, the Surf N Chess club has impacted the lives of thousands of students in Arizona.

Happy Monday!

As usual, we will start the week off with a chess puzzle!

Today’s puzzle is a tricky one.

Black to move. White has just moved their Queen dangerously close to your King. Their attack is enough to make anyone nervous. What can you do? Hint: keeping a calm and collected head can often lead to surprising results! Pay attention to their threats and see if you have something better. Good luck and Surfs Up Baby!

Happy Monday! We hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

Now, for today’s weekly chess puzzle. Be warned, this one is a bit tricky.

White to move. You are down material and your position is shaky. In order to prevail you’ll need to focus on what’s important and develop a good plan. Hint: all moves should be looked at, even the odd ones. Good luck and Surfs Up Baby!

Hello and Happy Wednesday!

Surf N' Chess proudly offers a chess experience that is unique but relatively consistent across all our schools. Today's post will help give an idea of what a typical day looks like for SNC students.

First, the chess master in charge of the school arrives and sets up the room. This includes any rearrangement of desks, setting up chess boards, prizes, and of course our custom playlist.

Second, the chess master retrieves the students or the students come to the chess room. Every chess master welcomes the students with a bright smile. This combined with the prizes, chess sets, and music helps to set the atmosphere we strive for.

Third, the chess master instructs the students with a chess lesson. This can also be used to show puzzles and build upon previous lessons.

Fourth, the chess master allows a set amount of time for the students to play games with their peers. The chess master will carefully watch the games and correct any mistakes or answer any questions.

Finally, the chess master signals it's time to clean up. Once the room is cleaned prizes are called. Each student receives up to two tickets during the chess day. If their number is called they are allowed to pick a prize from the prizes available.

We hope this quick summary of a typical SNC day was informative. As always Surfs Up Baby!

Happy Monday!
We hope you had a great weekend.

Let’s start the week off right with a cleverly fun chess puzzle.

White to move. Black has a great deal of pressure building around your King. You’ll have to come with a decisive plan in order to win this game! Hint: Defense and offense can sometimes be achieved simultaneously. If your opponent is creating pressure, you should see if creating even more pressure is possible. Good luck and Surfs Up Baby!

Happy Friday! We hope you all had a fantastic week and will have a even better weekend!

Our Spring tournament hosted and run by Surf N' Chess was a great success! We are going to offer more events in the future as part of our improvement process.

So what are the merits of a chess tournament? Aside from putting all the hard work and teachings into play, the kids get a chance to meet other SNC students as well as Chess Masters! The experience of playing with new people and competing can be what hooks a student to chess and encourages them to do better. Not just in chess but in academics and life as well!

Congrats to our top winners! Stay tuned for more SNC news. As always, Surfs Up Baby!

Happy Wednesday! We hope you are all having a great day.

Surf N' Chess offers a wide variety of prizes for our students. Of course, the most coveted is the shark tooth necklace. Now, it's easy to think the kids come for the prizes. However, as the semester continues, we see more of an interest in chess. The prizes become a bonus reward.

This is one of the ways Surf N' Chess is unique. Our prizes and even our music are heavily integrated with our surfing theme. Not only is this appealing on it's own, it allows the kids to learn and enjoy chess in a super fun atmosphere.

Have a great day and Surfs Up Baby!

Happy Wednesday! We hope you’re all having a great week thus far!

Here at Surf N’ Chess we believe in doing our absolute best when it comes to our students and community.

This means we hire individuals with a great passion and who have a love for the game of chess.

That being said, we’d love to hear your favorite SNC or chess memories! Please comment below.

I’ll start.

One of my greatest SNC memories involves the original Big Khauna and our current awesome SNC President. We met up for an interview, I was trying to join this amazing organization. At the end of the interview, Mr. Neely slips me very own shark tooth necklace. I managed to hide my jubilance until I was alone. Till this day I recall the intense emotion and positivity I felt when I knew I had found a group that sincerely cares about the community.

Surfs Up Baby! Thanks for your support!
