Citizenship is not just a virtue taught in class, but a virtue lived by the faculty! Archway and Prep faculty came together to volunteer at St. Mary’s Food Bank this morning. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to help others!

Sergio F. Montalvo, Jr. defended his thesis titled “On the Irredeemability of Man” examining The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. “Both texts warn of the consuming nature of evil, where, in committing more evil acts, or sins, said sins gain greater power over an individual, resulting in the individual demonstrating no good traits at all, while the suppression of said evil may also be considered good, or virtue. Given the claims posed by the books as well as the inherent ability to redeem regarding more inconsequential crimes, mankind is redeemable from evil, but not without a great price.”
Sergio plans to attend Arizona State University Barrett Honors to study Mechanical Engineering. “My favorite subject at Maryvale Prep was French due to the efficiency of the teaching methods. The class struck a balance between having enough rigor to learn without being overwhelming. My favorite piece of literature at Maryvale Prep was The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli due to it posing useful information that can be easily applied in daily life. The guide on navigating social hierarchies and preserving one's own influence in an ever-shifting world is more necessary now than ever, with a person's reputation just one social media post from being destroyed.”

Jessica Guzmán Guerrero defends her thesis “Defying The Social Script”, examining two texts by Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. “Both of these novels are by Jane Austen, who lived in a society where, at a certain age, parents would present their daughters to society. These women then had to put on an act to fit in with how society expected them to act. However, there are some women, like Marianne and Elizabeth, that do not want to follow society’s rules, leading them to being outcasts. Despite not following society’s rules, both Marianne and Elizabeth end up happy.”
Jessica plans to attend Glendale Community College for finance after graduation. “Something that I learned at Maryvale Prep that I will take into the future is to always be true to yourself and to believe in yourself even if you feel like giving up. My favorite event has to be the senior trip since I was able to see things that I had learned about on history lesson or even quotes and speeches I learned in American Rhetorical Tradition class.”

Regina Corona defends her thesis “Truth is Better than Lies” examining The Giver by Lois Lowry and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. “The most important thing I learned is that truth is a way to help people understand each other and a way to fix things. If we continue to lie to people, especially to those close to us, we can see them as the enemy and it stabs both of us in the heart. Lying is not a way to solve things and eventually the truth will come out anyway.”
Regina plans to attend Gateway Community College to be study Physical Therapy and play club soccer there. “At Maryvale Prep, I learned to always be kind and have courage to myself and others. I also saw that sometimes in order to be a good leader example, you have to work hard and never give up.”
