This message hits different when it starts in childhood. š©
P**p is your bodyās daily report card on gut health ā it shows digestion, hydration, fiber, and microbiome balance.
Easy-to-pass, well-shaped, right-color stools? = thriving gut.
Changes? Could signal diet the need for dietary tweaks, dehydration, or conditions like celiac or IBD that early catch can help big time.
Hippocrates was onto something: āAll disease begins in the gut.ā Modern science backs it ā microbiome impacts immunity, mood, everything. All healing begins in the gut, too!
When we talk p**p openly (no shame, just facts) with kids, explaining it as the bodyās natural waste exit and encouraging them to notice patterns , we build real health literacy.
It reduces embarrassment, prevents withholding, and guides better choices around food, water, and movement.
Thatās why I wrote How to Be a P**p Detective! ā a fun, detective-style kidsā book with simple checkpoints like the 5 Sās: Shape, Soft, Sink, Shade, Shoot. (New edition in the works! š)
Starting these convos early breaks taboos, empowers kids to tune into their bodies, and sets up lifelong awareness (hello, earlier colorectal cancer detection down the road).
Talking p**p at every age isnāt awkward ā itās essential preventive medicine.

šāØ Prioritizing restful sleep isnāt just about feeling refreshedāitās a game-changer for gut health, insulin resistance, and PCOS management! š“š¤
New research highlights how poor sleep quality disrupts gut microbiota balance, ramps up inflammation, and worsens insulin resistanceāa key driver of PCOS symptoms like irregular cycles, weight challenges, and androgen excess. Studies show women with PCOS often face higher rates of sleep disturbances (like OSA), creating a vicious cycle that fuels metabolic issues. Breaking it? Better sleep improves insulin sensitivity and supports a healthier gut microbiome for hormone balance! š
Teens are hit hard too: Recent stats reveal ~77% of US high schoolers get insufficient sleep (

Thank you to Phoenix Magazine for featuring my story in āBack from the Brinkā and for the beautiful opportunity to share my near-death experience with your wonderful team.
A special shoutout to the incredibly talented writer Meredith and photographer Mirelleāboth of you were an absolute joy to work with. Your kindness, professionalism, and genuine care made the process so meaningful and comfortable. Iām truly grateful for the way you captured and told my story.
Reliving that life-threatening blood clot at 18 while talking it through really hit meāhow close I came, and how completely focused I was on earning that perfect grade to become a doctor. Back then, it felt like the only thing that matteredāmore than life itselfābut the experience itself woke me up to the bigger truth: that life is the most precious gift, and living it fullyāwith gratitude in every momentāis what counts most.
This near-death crisis was one of the biggest turning points in my journey. It not only confirmed without a doubt that I was meant for this profession, but it gave me the strength and resolve to fight for it, no matter what. Iāve always been deeply aware of the people God has placed in my path to help me become a doctor, and Iām so thankful to be a pediatrician at Camelback Pediatrics, caring for amazing families, being part of their journeys, and healing alongside such a wonderful team every day. Most of all, Iām grateful for my faith, my family (as a mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, etc.), my friends, and the blessing of another day to love, serve, and heal.
Thank you, Phoenix Magazine, Meredith, and Mirelle, for giving me this platform to reflect on and share that life-changing moment so powerfully. Iām beyond grateful. ā¤ļø

This isnāt just church; itās a place where faith, love, and hope come alive in real, tangible waysāembodying everything I believe true religion and following Christ should be. Heart-transformed community, one perfect pour at a time.

š January & February recap: Embracing more real-life joy by reclaiming our time!
As a pediatrician dedicated to teens, Iām committed to being a good steward for my patients and my family. I often talk with them about how social media can quietly chip away at our soulāespecially during these formative years. Platforms are intentionally designed to grab and hold our attention with endless scrolls, comparisons, and triggers.
When I came across yet another study confirming that limiting use improves mental health scoresālike the PHQ-9 surveys we do at every teen well checkāI decided to walk the walk. Since mid-December, Iāve capped my social media at under 30 minutes a day (often even less š)āwith very limited posting.
The shift has been incredible: more energy, deeper focus, stronger presence for my family and patients, and my faith journey has truly evolved. Huge win!
Now, when we discuss anxiety, mood, sleep, or feeling overwhelmed after their surveys, I can share authentically: āIāve felt that pull tooāhereās what changed when I set limits.ā It builds real trust and helps the message land deeper.
I love creating content to educate families and patients on gut health, wellness, and key medical topicsābut the process of posting and putting content out there was surprisingly draining (even though I only scrolled a bit). Stepping back has been fantastic to say the least.
Science supports the benefits:
⢠Iowa State University (2023): Limiting to 30 min/day for 2 weeks reduced anxiety, depression, loneliness & FOMO in young adultsāeven with occasional slip-ups (effort counts!).
⢠2025 JAMA Network Open: A one-week break cut anxiety ~16%, depression ~25% (including PHQ-9 improvements), and boosted sleep in young people.
⢠U.S. Surgeon Generalās Advisory: Limiting use improves youth well-being overall.
Social media has upsides, but mindful limits protect our peace and souls!
Try a gentle family month: Less posting & scrolling, more real connection. Kick it off with The Social Dilemma on Netflixāthought-provoking for open family chats about mindful tech.
