A passing knowledge-test score does not mean you can ignore the missed areas before your checkride.

Under 14 CFR § 61.39, applicants must present their knowledge-test report and, when required, obtain an authorized instructor endorsement confirming that they:

• Received and logged preparation training within the 2 calendar months preceding the month of application
• Are prepared for the practical test
• Demonstrated satisfactory knowledge in the subject areas identified as deficient on the knowledge test

That means your missed knowledge codes should become part of a structured review: not a forgotten test report in your flight bag.

Ace Pilot Academy’s § 61.39 Knowledge Review helps organize those deficient areas into focused study and remediation. Use it to identify what needs attention, strengthen your explanations, and arrive better prepared to discuss your knowledge with your instructor and DPE.

This online ground-training resource supports your preparation; it does not replace required instruction, aircraft-specific training, or the endorsement of an authorized instructor.

Review the areas you missed. Understand the “why.” Become checkride ready.

A transponder failure and an ADS-B Out failure are not the same oral-exam answer: and squawking 7600 is not a universal fix.

A DPE may ask you to explain:

What failed: the transponder, ADS-B transmitter, or GNSS/position source?

What airspace and operation apply?

What does the aircraft’s POH, AFM, AFMS, or checklist require?

What must you communicate to ATC, and is a deviation or landing for maintenance appropriate?

Begin with aircraft control and communication. Identify the failure indication, advise ATC, follow the aircraft-specific procedure, and evaluate whether continued operation is legal and safe.

The regulatory framework may include 14 CFR §§91.213, 91.215, 91.225, and 91.227: but the correct answer depends on the equipment, airspace, and circumstances. Also remember that some indications may not clearly distinguish an ADS-B transmitter failure from a position-source failure.

The checkride standard is more than memorizing a code. You must explain the decision-making behind your response.

Use the AI DPE Examiner in the Ace Pilot Academy app to practice clear, examiner-style answers and prepare for follow-up questions grounded in FAA references.

What do you do when the airspeed indicator disagrees with the rest of the panel during an IFR checkride?

A pitot-static or instrument-system failure can produce unreliable airspeed, conflicting indications, and a dangerous temptation to chase faulty information. Your first responsibility is aircraft control: not troubleshooting while allowing the aircraft to deviate.

Use established pitch-and-power references appropriate to the aircraft, then cross-check standby or alternate instruments and other verified sources of performance information. Next, isolate the failure using the aircraft-specific POH/AFM abnormal or emergency checklist. Do not rely on a memorized procedure when the approved checklist and current aircraft data are available.

Communicate clearly with ATC and your crew: state what is unreliable, what information remains trustworthy, and what assistance you need. Then make a risk-based decision to continue, divert, or land based on verified information, weather, terrain, fuel, workload, and aircraft limitations.

DPE-style question: How would you explain your control strategy, instrument cross-check, checklist selection, and diversion decision if the primary airspeed indication became unreliable in IMC?

Can you answer a DPE-style question clearly when you only hear it once?

The oral exam tests more than recall. You must understand the question, organize your answer, and explain your reasoning clearly.

Ace Pilot Academy’s “Hear the Examiner” audio tool lets you listen to DPE-style questions instead of relying only on written prompts. Pause, think through the concept, and practice answering out loud: just as you would during an oral examination.

This helps build listening discipline, strengthen your explanations, and identify knowledge gaps before they appear at the checkride.

Use it as part of your online ground preparation, then reinforce the concepts with your instructor and aircraft-specific training.

Can you explain your next decision before the examiner asks why?

Ace Pilot Academy’s Scenario Trainer : Checkride Scenarios module helps you practice the judgment behind the answer, not just recite isolated facts. Work through realistic checkride-style situations, identify the risks, weigh your options, and explain the action you would take.

That matters because strong oral-exam performance depends on more than memorization. It shows how you connect aircraft control, systems knowledge, regulations, and aeronautical decision-making when conditions change.

Use each scenario to prepare your reasoning, then verify aircraft-specific procedures and limitations against the approved POH/AFM and checklist.

Build stronger explanations. Develop more disciplined decision-making. Become checkride ready with Ace Pilot Academy’s online ground-training resource.

Engine fire in flight is where isolated-fault thinking fails. The DPE asks: walk me through exactly what you do, in what order, and why.

Examiners want more than the memory item: distinguish a genuine fire from a false indication, isolate the threat, and execute the aircraft-specific POH/AFM emergency checklist in sequence: not improvise.

Decision framework:
1. CONFIRM the fire. Verify the warning against symptoms before shutdown. A false warning followed by a needless shutdown is a graded error.
2. SECURE the affected engine in the approved sequence: typically fuel selector off, mixture idle cutoff, throttle closed, then feather. Know why the order matters.
3. USE the extinguisher as the checklist directs. Do not improvise.
4. VERIFY the feather and shutdown. Confirm the propeller feathered and conditions are stable.
5. MAINTAIN aircraft control and a safe single-engine profile. Fire handling never comes at the expense of flying the airplane.

The DPE is scoring failure isolation, checklist discipline, verification rather than assumption, and contingency management. That is the difference between reciting a memory item and managing a cascading emergency.
