You like Friday the 13th?
The early ones were a little too rough and grindhouse for my taste. But when Part IV: The Final Chapter came out in ’84, I think the series really came into its own — commercially and artistically. The whole movie has a sharper, more deliberate feel, and a new layer of grim professionalism that really gives the kills a nasty edge. People like to compare it to Halloween, but I think Friday the 13th has a far more vicious, almost darkly playful sense of humor. In ’86, they released Jason Lives, easily their most polished sequel. I think the franchise’s undisputed masterpiece is Jason Voorhees himself — an icon so absurdly unstoppable, most people don’t really think about what he represents. But they should, because it’s not just about a masked killer and creative deaths. It’s also a sly commentary on the endless cycle of fear itself.
