10 Lessons I've Learned After Living and Teaching in the United States for 3 Years 🇺🇸🇰🇪

Three years ago, I left Kenya with a suitcase, my teaching experience, and a heart full of hope. Like many Kenyan teachers, I came to the United States seeking new opportunities, personal growth, and a chance to make a difference in another classroom.

The journey hasn't always been easy, but it has been worth it. These three years have taught me lessons I'll carry for the rest of my life.

Here are 10 things I've learned along the way:

1. Opportunities exist—but you must be prepared.
The USA offers many opportunities for teachers, but success doesn't come automatically. Your qualifications may open the door, but hard work, flexibility, and a willingness to learn keep it open.

2. Every sacrifice has a purpose.
Leaving family, friends, and the comfort of home wasn't easy. But every challenge has reminded me why I took this journey—to build a better future while doing what I love.

3. Teaching is universal, but every classroom is different.
As a Kenyan teacher, I quickly realized that every education system has its own culture. Adapting my teaching style while staying true to my passion has helped me grow professionally.

Do I ever regret leaving Kenya and choosing to teach in the USA 🇰🇪🇺🇸?

My answer is always no.

Not because the journey was easy.

There were days when I missed home deeply. I missed my family, Kenyan food, our culture, and the comfort of being surrounded by people who knew me long before this journey began. There were moments when I felt homesick, exhausted, and questioned whether I had made the right decision.

But today, when I look back, I can honestly say that taking that leap of faith changed my life.

As a Kenyan teacher in the USA through the J-1 program, I have been blessed with opportunities I once only dreamed about. I've grown not only as an educator but also as a person. I've become stronger, more independent, more adaptable, and more confident in my abilities.

Teaching in America has opened doors for me and my family. It has allowed me to provide better opportunities, support my loved ones, experience a different education system, and grow both professionally and personally.

This journey has also taught me that dreams require courage. Sometimes, you have to leave your comfort zone, trust God's timing, and believe that every season has a purpose.

Do I miss Kenya?

Absolutely. Every single day.

Kenya will always be my home. It shaped who I am, and I carry it with pride wherever I go.

Remember: The goal of consequences is not punishment—it is to teach responsibility, maintain a positive learning environment, and help students make better choices.

🎯 Common Behaviors and Possible Consequences

1️⃣ Side Conversations During Instruction

Behavior: Students continue talking while directions are being given.

Possible Consequence:
✔️ Nonverbal cue or proximity

At first, you may just be contented with presence over perfection. Don’t get overwhelmed trying to get everything together or reach perfection in a day. Growth in classroom management takes time, patience, and daily practice. What matters most is showing up, staying steady, and learning as you go.

One important mindset shift is this: don’t show uncertainty, fear, or dislike toward students. You may dislike the misbehavior, but you still remain a caring and passionate teacher for everyone in the room. Students feel your energy more than your words. When you are calm, steady, and intentional, they respond to that presence.

One of the hardest parts of teaching is classroom management, especially when you are still building your confidence. At first, it may feel uncomfortable correcting behavior, redirecting students, or enforcing rules. But over time, you will realize that students actually feel safer and learn better when expectations are clear and consistent.

Here are some simple classroom management tips that helped me survive and grow in the classroom:

BUILDING FINANCIAL FREEDOM IN AMERICA 🇺🇸

Many of us came to America with one goal:
a better financial future for ourselves and our families.

But here is a hard truth…
Working hard alone is not enough.

Back home, many of us survived paycheck to paycheck and said,
“It was just by the grace of God.”

Yes, God’s grace is real.
But in America, you can be working every day… and still end up broke, in debt, or even homeless if you don’t have financial knowledge.

So what do we do?

I am not a financial expert, but I want to share a few simple steps that can change your life if you take them seriously.

1. Open at least 2 bank accounts
Have a checking account for daily spending (ATM, bills, etc.)
Have a savings account where your money can sit and grow.

Don’t mix everything together. Give your money structure.

2. Create a budget and respect it
If you don’t control your money, your money will control you.

Know how much you earn.
Know how much you spend.
And most importantly — don’t spend money you don’t have.
Pressures from family back home can be tough but be realistic, money does not grow on trees.

3. Pay attention to healthcare when choosing a job
In America, one hospital visit can destroy your finances.

Some jobs offer free health insurance for employees and reduced cost for family members.
This is not a small benefit — it is financial protection.

4. Think about your future NOW (401k & Roth IRA)
Retirement may feel far away, but time moves fast.

A 401k through your job is one of the easiest ways to build wealth.
You can also open a Roth IRA and contribute yearly.

Your future self is depending on the decisions you make today.

5. Start investing (even if it’s small)
You don’t need to be rich to invest.

Start small. $20 here or there. Then increase as your income increases. Stay consistent.
Over time, your money can begin to work for you — instead of you always working for money.

6. Build your credit intentionally
Credit is powerful in America.

If you don’t have credit, start with a credit builder account or secured options.
Make small, consistent payments.

I personally started this way — and I’m still building.
A good credit score is the difference between you getting less than 10% interest rate on a loan versus paying up to 24.99%. Some states cap interest rate at 36%, can you imagine⁉️
7. Get life insurance
Let’s be honest.

It is painful to see families go online begging for funeral money.
With proper planning, this can be avoided.

Life insurance is not for you — it is for the people you love.

8. Invest in your children
Your children are your greatest legacy.

If you don’t guide and invest in them properly, you may end up raising your grandchildren too.

Teach them. Support them. Build them.

Because true wealth is not just what you have ,
it’s what continues after you are gone.
