For over three decades, George Dean, President and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Urban League, has been a driving force in advancing economic empowerment, education, and social justice for Black and underserved communities in Arizona. Under his leadership, the Greater Phoenix Urban League has expanded programs in workforce development, early childhood education, and homeownership, helping countless individuals achieve financial stability and self-sufficiency.

Happy Black History Month! This is a special one as 2026 marks 100 years since Dr. Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week, laying the foundation for .

Though we honor Black history all year-round, it’s important to recognize the significance of this specific month and the advocacy it took to focus the nation’s attention on Black brilliance, creativity, and innovation every February.

This is especially important as this Administration literally tears down public markers of slavery, bans books by Black authors, removes or alters the teaching of Black history in schools, and much more.

We resist these dangerous tactics and affirm over and over again that:

✊🏿 Black history IS American history
✊🏾 We carry the fight of those who came before us
✊🏽 Our history won’t be erased, altered or watered down
