“Preparation and play are essential to helping children cope with medical experiences.” -Jessika Boles, PhD, CCLS

Child life uses both preparation and play to help children feel more informed, more supported, and more ready to face what’s ahead. When kids can prepare and play, they often cope with a little more confidence and a lot less fear.

A child's medical procedure doesn't end when the appointment is over.

Whether it's an unexpected trip to the emergency department for stitches, a broken bone, or a planned surgery like a tonsillectomy, the emotional impact often lasts much longer than the medical visit.

🌵 Parents spend days preparing.

🌵 They take time away from work.

And afterward, many are managing pain, anxiety, sleep disruption, and helping their child regain confidence.

🌵 🌵 Nearly 1 in 5 children visits an emergency department each year, and millions more undergo outpatient surgeries and procedures.

For employers, these events often translate into missed work, distracted employees, and ongoing stress—not just on the day of the procedure, but for days or weeks afterward.

Helping families prepare before a procedure and cope afterward can reduce anxiety, improve recovery, and help employees return to work more focused and supported.

Not every family challenge is a crisis—but it can still impact the workplace.

🌵 A child who is terrified of needles.
🌵 A daily battle over taking medication.
🌵 A routine blood draw that turns into an exhausting experience.

These moments are incredibly common.

🌵🌵 Research suggests up to two-thirds of children experience significant fear of needles, and approximately 50% of children with chronic conditions struggle with medication adherence.

For parents, that often means delayed appointments, missed work, increased stress, and hours spent managing situations that could be made easier with the right preparation and coping strategies.

Sometimes the most valuable employee benefit isn't another app, it's helping families successfully navigate everyday healthcare challenges before they become bigger problems.

This is why we created Saguaro Coping. Small moments of support can make a big difference for families...and for employers.

“Child life services are integral to quality pediatric care.” That’s exactly why child life matters. Caring for children means caring for their emotional needs, too. Child life helps make healthcare more understandable, more supportive, and more human for children and families.

When an employee experiences a loss, they don't leave their grief at home.

The death of a spouse, parent, child, family member—even a beloved pet—doesn't just affect one person. It affects the entire family, including the children who often don't understand what's happening.

🌵 🌵 Approximately 1 in 5 employees experiences a significant bereavement each year, and grief-related productivity losses are estimated to cost U.S. employers more than $100 billion annually.

Most organizations offer a few days of bereavement leave. But what happens when an employee returns to work and is still trying to answer questions like:

🌵 "Where did Grandma go?"

🌵 "Is Mommy going to die too?"

🌵 "Will our dog come back?"

Helping parents have these conversations with confidence doesn't just support children, it helps employees return to work with less stress, greater focus, and the reassurance that their family is coping together.

That’s where Saguaro Coping steps in. Supporting families is more than a compassionate benefit. It's an investment in your workforce.

July is Bereaved Parents Awareness Month, a time to hold close the parents grieving the loss of a child and to recognize the support families may need along the way. While the family is grieving, siblings often have questions, and sometimes adults do not know what to say. That is where child life can help.

Child life specialists support families by offering age-appropriate explanations, helping siblings understand what has happened, and giving parents guidance for hard conversations. They can also help children express feelings through play, prepare for memorials or family changes, and find ways to stay connected to their sibling’s memory.

When friends and neighbors may not know how to help, child life can step in with compassionate support, clear language, and tools that help families move through grief together. No family should have to navigate bereavement alone.
