Foot cramping isn't always something you just have to “push through.” Your technique, alignment, muscle recruitment, and recovery can all play a role.
Here are 5 things I want you to look at:
1. Foot alignment: Poor alignment can make smaller muscles work overtime.
2. Not using your foot intrinsics: If you're not developing control through the smaller muscles of the foot, other muscles may compensate.
3. Crunching your toes in relevé: Spreading the toes will actually help you balance better in relevé as well.
4. Pushing too far or over-knuckling in tendu: This can cause microtrauma to the foot/ankle and decrease foot technique.
5. Skipping arch recovery: Gentle rolling after class can help your arches relax and recover. Roll to release, not to flatten your arch.
And remember: these are CLUES, not a diagnosis. If your feet consistently cramp, it's worth exploring this issue deeper...
