Best Family Hikes in the Phoenix Area🌵

I often get asked about family-friendly trails in the area, so I’m sharing some of my family’s favorites. Perfect for all ages, these trails combine scenic views, manageable distances, and fun features for everyone!

1. Dragonfly Trail – This easy 1.6-mile loop in Cave Creek features gentle terrain and takes hikers through a variety of desert landscapes. Seasonal water flow offers a chance to spot dragonflies and other wildlife near the creek bed.

2. Butcher Jones Trail – Enjoy lakeside views and shaded spots by Saguaro Lake. This was one of our first family hikes and remains a favorite to this day.

3. Fatman’s Pass via Mormon Trail – This kid-friendly slot canyon is so fun to explore! Both kids and adults will love the unique rock formations along this trail. Located in South Mountain Preserve, it’s perfect for a quick last-minute adventure.

4. Treasure Loop – Located in Lost Dutchman State Park, the combination of history and stunning scenery on this trail will leave you wanting to come back and explore more of the park.

5. Yavapai Point – This moderate trail offers sweeping views of Lake Pleasant and the surrounding mountains. If you’re lucky you may even spot a wild b***o 🫏!

6. Hackberry Springs Loop – A hidden gem in the Superstition Mountains, this trail descends into a canyon with a seasonal creek and fun rock formations for little ones to explore.

7. Hieroglyphics Trail – Discover ancient petroglyphs and small waterfalls after seasonal rain. This 3-mile out-and-back trail in the Superstition Mountains has a gradual incline that’s manageable for kids and beginners.

8. Merkle Trail – Located in Usery Mountain Regional Park in Mesa, this easy one-mile loop offers a relaxing walk through classic Sonoran Desert scenery. It’s an interpretive trail and accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.

âś… as always please leave no trace and happy exploring!
