At Fern and Feather we get to know each child individually and work collaboratively with them to grow the qualities and skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. We don't follow a set curriculum because we believe in children's innate drive to learn through play and social engagement. Instead we meet each child where they are, and strive to foster an environment and a community that helps them build connection to the earth, themselves, and each other. Year after year we see the incredible fruits of the approach. This is the stuff happy, kind, and confident kids are made of.

This is our team of incredibly caring, creative, and skilled adults and teens who will be leading our Summer Camps for the next few weeks! Summer camps are an opportunity for Elementary School aged kids to get a taste of that Forest School life, and they absolutely love it.

There are so many reasons why it is exciting and wonderful to see kids learning to organize their own group play. It demonstrates confidence, requires creativity, problem solving, and advanced social skills.

For example, when organizing What Time Is It Mr. Fox, these kids had to figure out who would be Mr. Fox and how to establish the order in which turns would be taken. After a while, they decided on their own to increase the number of kids being Mr. Fox so as to reduce conflict and allow the game to continue when it was starting to go off the rails.

I can think of a million ways that developing these skills as kids will serve them well in later childhood and adult life. What are some of the benefits that you can think of??

It's official! School is out for the summer! Camp is all tucked in and put to bed.
But don't worry, we'll be back for Summer camps in just a little over a month!

We still have openings for pre-school next Fall! And we're still giving tours to interested families through the summer! (You just might not see our school in her FULL glory).

Did you know that in our early stages Fern and Feather had a designated "mud kitchen" much like the ones you might be seeing all over your social media feed these days. But before long, we realized that it was actually limiting play more than it was encouraging it, and we moved to a more open ended "giant spool full of buckets." Kids use these to set up their own "kitchens" all over camp, as well as drum sets, worm collecting stations, hot cocoa shops, and an infinite array of other creative things.

If you, the grown up, are drawn to the idea of creating a beautiful mud kitchen for your little one, because that kind of creating sounds fun to you - then great! More power to you. That is a kind of play that many adults enjoy. But, if that is actually more of a barrier and you've been feeling less than in some way by not creating something fancy - I have great news for you. Kids don't need fancy. They just need space and freedom to imagine and create.

It's not just ok to just throw some buckets in your back yard and call it a day - it's actually a great way to give your kid permission to play in all kinds of different ways. And if they're struggling to know what to do- we find that the simple prompt "can you make me some soup?" usually gets their creative juices flowing. ;-)
