Our colleagues have left, and we are descansadandos, becoming un-tired at our hotel. Tomorrow we will go to church where the workshop was held—that's if we don't lose the piece of paper the dirección, which is not quite an address, is written on—before heading to the airport for as quick a flight home as we could arrange. The reaction was surprisingly enthusiastic when we passed on our greetings to the participants from our church, and they wanted us to be sure to pass their greetings back.

The workshop went fine. There was a concert in the evening at which two groups introduced songs they had written this afternoon and Van and Pastor Samuel combined Cherokee flute and Quechua song in a moving ensemble. Uploading media, on the other hand, has been singularly unsuccessful. Better a successful workshop and unsuccessful blog than vice versa. So I'm going to bed.

While those who have come seem to enjoy what we’re presenting, not everyone agrees with our premise. A couple of pastors are asking why we would want to “bring the world into church,” certainly a reasonable question. This has stimulated discussion on being careful not to offend our fellow believers (1 Corinthians 14) and spiritual qualifications for church musicians. We hope the discussions continue tomorrow.

And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm, in the heart of the furnace roar; And he wore a smile you could see a mile, and he said: “Please close that door. It’s fine in here, but I greatly fear you’ll let in the cold and storm— Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it’s the first time I’ve been warm.” [ 156 more words ]

Nothing earth-shaking so far. The plane out of Philly was delayed, but we made the flight to Lima and were in bed before midnight. Tomorrow midday we fly to Tarapoto and try to warm up.

Off we go tomorrow! I can still remember the day my Air Force Reserve father and I were walking around Paine Field in Everett, Washington, and he told me that for every soldier on the field there were a hundred people backing him up. (They were pretty much all “him” in those days.) Well, we’re constantly being reminded of what it feels like to have a corps of people behind us as we go off. [ 195 more words ]

I think it was Tolkien who said that life is what happens between scheduled appointments. By that definition we did a lot of living after the last post. The Internet went down all over Ayacucho on Saturday, and it was still off when we left on Monday, so putting together a blog post was out. That was just as well, because I caught a cold (or had a relapse from an old one) and couldn’t do one anyway. [ 316 more words ]

Monday dawned sunny and cool, and by midmorning we were on the road by taxi to Huanta, a town much smaller than Ayacucho. On the way we were treated to beautiful views of the Andean desert. After an hour and a half or so, we arrived in Huanta, which struck us as being much more relaxed and open, as well as warmer and even a bit cleaner than Ayacucho. [ 517 more words ]

Today I had to stop denying I’m suffering from altitude sickness. I slept the day away and still felt horrible when I got up in the late afternoon. Altitude sickness medicine left over from our trip here in October, coca-based tea (!), an asthma inhaler, aspirin, and the grace of God, and I’m at least able to post this and look forward to a full day tomorrow.
