Election Polling - Statistics are NOT the problem: Statistics are NOT wrong. The reason for polling unreliability is flaws in SAMPLING. I don't want to get too technical, but it must be said that pollsters have to do RANDOM sampling to get a good poll. Pollsters TRY to do random sampling, but it is impossible. They can only sample people who will talk to phone solicitors. When pollsters call, lots of people (me included) will send those calls to voicemail or simply direct them to spam or just don’t answer. A lot of us sidestep calls when we don’t recognize the caller’s number. My guess is there are important sub-groups of us who are completely missed even when pollsters TRY to use good methods. Polls are reliable if the samples are truly random. But they never are. (This problem, of course is just one of many reasons samples are not good.)
