Awe-inspiring performance -a combination of monologues and Ethiopian songs - by Ethiopian-Italian storyteller Gabriella Ghermandi yesterday sponsored by my amazing Italian program colleagues from our fab department Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

The performance was a testament to the power of oral storytelling in preserving cultural memory.

Please join us for a premier (and free) screening and music performance of the al-Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture produced film The Travels of Ibn Jubayr (40 minutes), a beautiful and at times humorous imagining of the 12th century Andalusian traveler's journey to Mecca. LIve musical accompaniment by composer and musician Maurice Louca. Post-screening Q&A with producers Lisa Volta-Zalloum and Joseph Fahim.

@albustanseeds’ short film “The Travels of Ibn Jubayr” was envisioned as “an Arab Don Quixote navigating the vagaries of the Arab world and navigating the question of faith,” according to co-producer @joe.fahim.1. Directed by @alaaeddinealjem, it reimagines the 12th-century pilgrimage of one of history’s greatest explorers.

Earlier this year, we got a preview of the film and heard more about its background. Two premiere screenings this week (3/25 & 3/31), at @lightboxfilmcenter and @the_rotunda_philly, feature a live score performed by experimental composer @mauricelouca.
