There's a group that's always existed, yet was/is largely ignored by government systems, when it comes to determining who needs assistance. While the percentage of Americans in poverty continues to drop, the percentage of Americans who can't afford basic daily expenses grows.

Another example of universal basic income getting a family out of poverty. Allowing people to have the power and dignity to make the decisions they need with money they are given, they are able to use the money to support themselves how they need and participate in their local economy.
"Sullivan said she appreciates that GBI allowed her to spend money in a way that filled the financial gaps where her family needed it most. She added that the element of choice is what made basic income more helpful for her than other support programs."

"Caitlyn Colbert, a single mother and social worker in Denver, represents the predicament many Americans are battling with the rising costs of rent. A decade ago, Colbert was able to afford her two-bedroom apartment at a monthly rate of $750, but by last year, her rent had escalated dramatically to $3,374.
The increase in living costs is not an isolated case; it echoes the experiences of millions across the nation, particularly affecting communities of color. These people are often forced to make choices between covering rent and fulfilling essential needs such as food, healthcare and education."

This is often the perspective we examine when we look at the root causes of poverty and the reinforcement of poverty.
"But what if the focus on the disadvantaged is misplaced? What if the persistence of poverty has less to do with the misfortunes of the needy than with the advantages the affluent presume they are entitled to? In Poverty, by America, Matthew Desmond, a sociologist at Princeton, argues that we need to examine the behavior and priorities not of the poor but of “those of us living lives of privilege and plenty.”
"To the contrary, poverty is a social reality that Americans create and sustain—and from which many of the nonpoor benefit materially in more direct ways than they care to acknowledge. Desmond’s mission is to disabuse the better-off among us of the illusion that they are mere bystanders with their hands tied. Many wealthy people assume that the built-in advantages that come with affluence are their due, and take for granted their freedom to choose among many life options. What they fail to recognize is that their choices contribute to foreclosing options for people of lesser means, whose lives are already far more constrained."
The One Cause of Poverty That’s Never Considered
In a new book, Matthew Desmond argues that to understand what keeps people poor, we need to take a good look at the rich.
