I cannot stress the importance of surrounding yourself with women who are confident, willing to support other women, share what they know and overall trying to make our communities a better place.

Sometimes, building phases call for sacrifices.

I wish we talked about the liminal space with where we started, the lifestyle sacrifices and the end goals. The inflated success stories we see on socials are built off quick dopamine hits and don’t show the inbetweens.

Nothing bust to last, is built quickly.

The overturn of Roe V Wade…

I’ve been sitting on this for a week now. Roe V Wade was overturned while I was in the air on the way to Florida. During vacation I tried to shut it out but now that I’m back to reality…the reality of this being overturned is scary.

I’m not here to discuss abortion as birth control. Being pro choice. Pro life. Whatever your case may be. I’m here to discuss the plain ignorance of the American government and the tit for tat games Democrats and Republicans play with each other.

They say there is supposed to be a separation of church and government. Yet the leading cause to Roe V Wade being overturned is religious views of Republicans. Science can deny every claim they have for overturning this very important law.

A baby cannot survive out of the womb before 24 weeks if the mother goes into preterm labor. Therefore, how can legislators decide against science that life begins at conception? It simply isn’t true.

Picture this: I just found out I was 4 months pregnant, without knowing. Genetic screening tells me my child has a 46% change of having Trisomy 21. At my anatomy scan at 21 weeks, instead of being told everything looked good, I’m told my baby's brain stopped developing possibly around 14 weeks but there was still a heartbeat. My baby is beginning to have strokes inside my body which cause him pain and my body stress. If I try to keep the pregnancy until full term, I’m told I will either die, my baby will die or if he is born, he will live a life in agony and pain. Connected to machines, medications, wheelchairs, painful tests and surgeries just to prolong life. Why is it anyone’s decision but my own and my partners what I decide to do?

Rowen’s medical needs are very minor compared to other parents of kids with Trisomy 21. But there have been times where I cry weekly, I feel defeated, isolated, scared, constantly trying to figure out the next piece when an issue arises, on the whim hospital visits, nursing in my home, the trauma of seeing your child go through surgeries, tests, blood work constantly. Being a medical parent isn’t a walk in the park. It just so happens with all the trauma in my own life before Rowen, I was trained for this. My nervous system is literally wired to withstand trauma at this point in my life.

I would never judge another parent in my shoes for making the hard decision to terminate a pregnancy if the quality of life for all parties, especially for the baby if it means a short life of pain and suffering. Brain dead humans on life support have more rights over their bodies than living breathing women do in America.

If this law was truly overturned for the children and not spiteful control, a budget plan would have been created on how to put more funding into foster care, disability services, opening more group homes, paying foster parents more, more resources for healthcare and reproductive education in inner cities and so forth. It isn’t about the babies because the same people who wanted this law overturned per their religious views are the same ones who complain about government assistance. Two years ago I had a choice and when Roe V Wade, I lost that choice in many states. It’s a scary time to be a woman in America right now.
