Hi y'all,
We have our SECOND TALK of the semester planned for November 9th! Zoom link TBA!
Our speaker is **Mr. Brian Heath**. Brian Heath is the Data and Machine Learning Lead at Tortuga AgTech, a startup whose mission is to build a healthier society and thriving planet through smarter farming. At Tortuga he leads the organization responsible for machine learning model design, integration of CV/ML technologies on robotic platforms, and the systems that support data pipelining, warehousing, and analytics. He joined Tortuga in July of 2019 after completing his Masters in Computer and Information Technology at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied machine learning applications in the program analysis space.
Here’s some info about the talk: As machine learning understanding becomes more mainstream and its applications more commercially viable, we see a greater demand to address the challenges of applying CV/ML solutions to natural and biological domains. In this conversation, we discuss the exciting AgTech industry and how machine learning has allowed robotic systems to compete with humans at tasks that have taken millennia to perfect like harvesting and agronomics. With deliberate and iterative problem formulation alongside practical techniques like machine learning pipelining, Tortuga AgTech in Denver is creating innovative solutions for an industry experiencing a technological evolution. We will also discuss career planning in the data science and machine learning spaces, and how to prepare for the transition from academia to the professional workplace.

We are excited to announce that the ACLU team’s paper has been accepted for the Data Science for Social Good track of the Web Conference 2020! As part of PDSG’s Data Science for Good initiative, we spent the past few months working with the ACLU of Pennsylvania. Our work culminated in a paper that talks about our exploration of bias within this system of cash bail assignment.
