We’re proud to share that our Associate Director of Communication and Administration, Natalie Shaak, presented at the American Chemical Society Fall Meeting in Washington, D.C. yesterday as part of a symposium titled “Tackling World Hunger and Food Security: Reducing Food Waste.”

Natalie spoke on strengthening food security for low-income families by reducing food waste and expanding choice. She highlighted the paradox that the food wasted each year in the US could feed every food-insecure person three times over, while barriers like logistics and policy keep that food from the families who need it most.

Natalie called for innovation, advocacy, and collaboration among scientists, nonprofits, academia, and industry to create sustainable solutions beyond traditional charity models. A huge thanks to ACS for including this critical conversation in their program!

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a serious public health concern, especially for Black women who face disproportionately higher exposure to trauma. This can lead to long-term negative health outcomes, including chronic diseases, mental health issues, and disparities in access to care.

In our newest Voices blog post, Center staff member Sherita shares her personal experience with childhood trauma and what she has learned at the Center to help her take back her power and disrupt the cycle of intergenerational trauma.

83% of parents of children under the age of 5 experience challenges finding quality, affordable child care, independently of income level. Cost is not the only barrier. Licensed high-quality child care can also be geographically limited and/or mis- matched with the hours or schedule of care needed. Ensuring parents have access to quality, affordable child care is imperative to increasing both parent and child health.
