The Troth

http://www.thetroth.org Heathen organization

The Troth is dedicated to exploring, practicing and promoting the pre-Christian religion of the Germanic peoples, who include the English, Norse, Icelanders, Swedes and Germans, among others. This religion is known by various names, including Ásatrú, Heathenry, the Elder Troth, and others. Although there are many variations in beliefs and practices within this faith, and many ways of describing and classifying these differences, we all share a defining personal loyalty to, or "Troth" with, the gods and goddesses of the Northlands, such as Odin, Thor, Frigga, and many others; a deep respect for our Germanic religious, cultural and historical heritage; and a strong determination to practice the moral principles followed by our noble predecessors, including Courage, Truth, Honor, Loyalty, Discipline, Hospitality, Industriousness, Self-reliance, and Steadfastness. In order to help modern Heathens better to understand and practice the Elder Troth, we publish a quarterly journal, Idunna, and carry on other publishing projects. The best-known such project to date is Our Troth Vol. I, a collective work of over 700 pages incorporating the research, thought and experience of many Troth members and friends, also available online. It has a companion volume, Our Troth Vol. II as well. We are also involved in producing a series of pamphlets covering several aspects of practicing Heathenry in contemporary society. In addition to publishing activities, the Troth conducts a training program for prospective Heathen clergy, incorporating study, training and experience in lore knowledge, theology, ceremonial practice, group organization, and counseling, and leading to certification after an extensive evaluation and final examination. The Troth also tries to assist its members to form local groups to practice our religion and make it more widely available, by referring people to existing groups, providing networking help through local coordinators, or "Stewards," listing affiliated groups, and supporting and publicizing local and regional gatherings when requested. Once a year, the Troth sponsors a major gathering at which members and interested folks from all over North America, and often from Europe, attend, conduct workshops and religious ceremonies, and discuss and demonstrate their many skills and religious practices. This has been an invaluable opportunity to experience the richness of modern Heathenry, and add depth and energy to one's own practice. The Troth currently has over 500 members worldwide. We are incorporated as a non-profit religious corporation in the state of New York, and are recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) religious organization. The Troth exists in order to celebrate our religious and cultural heritage, rather than to promote political, racial, social or other agendas; membership in the Troth and participation in our activities is open to worthy folks regardless of race, ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation. We do not permit discrimination on these grounds in the activities of the Troth or any of its affiliated groups. If you feel drawn to the ways of Germanic Heathenry and would like to participate in our growing community we invite you to drop us a line at the e-mail addresses listed here. Start today to lend a hand in the challenging work of restoring the Elder Troth to a proud, open and active role in our society, culture and world. The old gods are calling; to hear their call is a joy, an honor, and a duty. If they call to you, it is time to take your place among friends and kin, and bring new honor and strength to our ancient heathen faith.

Mission: The Troth's mission is to educate, train, provide resources for, and otherwise promote the polytheistic religion known as Northern European Heathenry or Asatru. Our religion contains many variations, names, and practices, including Theodism, Irminism, Odinism, and Anglo-Saxon Heathenry, and The Troth seeks to place itself as an umbrella organization where all Asatruar may meet, worship, and learn from one another. We understand that what we all share is a defining personal loyalty to, or Troth with, the Gods and Goddesses of Northern Europe, our specific and tribal ancestors, and the landvaettir, or spirits of the earth around us. Our Gods and Goddesses belong primarily to two tribes: the Aesir, and the Vanir, and are known to us as Odin, Frigga, Thor, Sif, Njord, Frey, Freya, Tyr, Idunna, and many others. We are deeply proud of our indigenous Northern European religious, cultural, and historical heritages. We welcome all people, whatever their religious, cultural, or ancestral background, gender or sexual orientation, who have developed or wish to develop a relationship with our Gods and Goddesses, and would like to know more about Asatru. Together, our members practice the moral principles followed by our noble predecessors, including: Boldness, Truth, Honor, Troth, Self-Rule, Hospitality, Industry, Self-Reliance, Steadfastness, Equality, Strength, Wisdom, Generosity, and Family Responsibility. The Troth provides excellence in its resources, up to date research in Northern European Heathenry, and training programs for future scholars and/or Asatru Clergy. Its outreach program teaches people to be stewards for their local geographical areas both inside the United States and throughout the world. In everything it does, The Troth strives to embody the spirit of reciprocity and ethics provided for us by our religious, reconstructed cultural traditions.

FREE COLORING PAGES FROM THE TROTH

From Ben Waggoner the Troth Shope

"Right.

I got this inspiration this morning, and I quickly tried to act on it. This project isn’t finished, but I wanted to put it out there anyway for people to try.

So here’s the thing: Some of us have kids (or grandkids, or other small persons of personal interest). Most of us are stuck indoors with ‘em for an indefinite future. It’d be nice if the Troth could come up with fun things for kids and families to do while we’re all stuck indoors riding out the coronavirus.

I dug around in my files and found some line drawings I’d made, and some royalty-free ones from elsewhere, that all seemed like they’d make good coloring pages. I quickly enlarged them, cleaned them up a bit. . . . and now a set of six 8.5x11” coloring pages is up on Lulu.com downloadable as a PDF, at no charge. That’s right: Free fa’ nuttin.’

http://www.lulu.com/shop/the-troth/ancient-art-coloring-pages/ebook/product-24495376.html

This is emphatically not the final version of this project. When I have time, I want to add pages. I’m also contemplating adding some kids’ paper and pencil games, activities, simple recipes, anything that kids and parents can do that might be fun (and even a bit educational). I would be happy to enlist the help of anyone else who can create good coloring images or has activities to suggest—this could end up being a sizable activity book, if people are willing to pitch in. . . .

But for the moment, in the time I had ,with the resources I had on hand, I’ve thrown this up on-line. Anybody who wants to may download these and use them. I’ll add new activity sheets as I have time. Maybe some of you might, as well. So talk to me—tell me how you (and, if applicable, your kids) like this."

[11/05/19]   PRESS RELEASE:

The Troth, an international Heathen organization, has issued a statement regarding the recent plot by Richard Holzer to blow up Temple Emanuel in Pueblo, Colorado:

The Troth strongly condemns anyone who would want to prohibit the free exercise of religion by the use of terrorism. While Mr. Holzer might wear the emblem of Heathenry, he does not hold the values of inclusive Heathenry or organizations such as the Troth, and its programs such as Heathens Against Hate. Everyone deserves to worship in the way they choose without fear of harm coming to them. We offer our support and thoughts to Temple Emanuel and are grateful for the FBI agents who worked to prevent what could have been a tragedy.

The Troth also strongly opposes the statement made in the FBI affidavit stating Mr. Holzer had received “various white supremacy paraphernalia as gifts for the UCs, including a flag, several patches, a metal Thor’s hammer, and a mask.” The Thor’s Hammer, also known as a Mjolnir, is a sacred symbol in our religion and worn by Heathens across the world. It is not a symbol of hate, but a symbol of those of us who are of the Heathen faith.

All press inquiries should be directed to [email protected] and not to this page or message.

[07/31/19]   Statement on the Arrest of Garrett "Odinschild" Kelsey

On July 23, 2019, Garrett Kelsey was arrested in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for making racist, violent threats via email and telephone a Jewish organization based in Manhattan. Among other things, the man demanded that the organization apologize to the “Asatru community” for posting a video about Nordic neo-Nazis. He identified himself as “Garrett Odinschild”, a reference to the Norse god Odin. Ásatrú is one of several related modern pagan traditions and sects that focus on revitalizing the pre-Christian religions of the Germanic-speaking peoples.

The Troth is an international organization that supports and furthers the revival of Germanic pagan traditions, including Asatru. Unfortunately, there is a long history of individuals and groups using our gods and holy signs for the promotion of racist and white supremacist doctrines, a problem that continues to this day. However, in the historical sources for the religion of the Viking-era Norse, Anglo-Saxons, and other related peoples, there is simply nothing that even hints at a pagan religious mandate for hatred towards Jews or any other racial or ethnic group. Nor do we condone racist actions or racial hatred among our members today. We condemn the threats allegedly made by the accused as unworthy deeds, for which there is no justification in our religion. We wil also continue our work promoting inclusive Heathenry with our many programs including Heathens Against Hate and InReach Services.

The Troth stands against all racist misuses of our religious tradition and stands willing to cooperate with all persons of good will, whatever their faith, in opposing it.
