JEWEL stands for Jewish Educational Wisdom, Experience & Leadership Rabbi Jeff Eisenstat - Rabbi Erin Hirsh - Rabbi Sarah Messinger

We are rabbis and educators whose careers are dedicated to building creative, dynamic and engaging Jewish communities. Each of us has a distinct skill set that we bring to our work in Jewish education, but we are united by our passion for maximizing Jewish engagement and our commitment to creating and promoting high-quality Jewish programming and experiences.

“If all you see of Judaism is your mediocre Hebrew school and two High Holy Day services a year . . . why would you walk away from such an experience thinking, ‘You know, I really think Judaism can help me cultivate a meaningful spirituality, and explore my big questions about what it means to be a good person … do good in the world … and lead a meaningful, purposeful life. I really think this is something I want to teach to my children.’

And I find this to be maddening, because all of this is exactly what Judaism has to offer people. But they have no way of knowing that. It’s this epic communications problem where we never convey to the average Jew precisely the things about Judaism that they would find to be most meaningful and relevant to their lives.”

Friends, I (Erin) am thrilled to announce that curricula and "seder starters" that I have compiled and edited on the issue of MODERN SLAVERY are now available as FREE downloads.

Visit www.freetheslaves.net/Judaism and download Seder Starters, a collection of readings and activities that you can integrate into your seder. Engage everyone around the table, enhance the conversation, and help slaves on our Festival of Freedom.

In addition to the Seder Starters, a distinguished group of Jewish educators have contributed to the creation of teaching materials on modern slavery from a Jewish perspective. The state-of-the-art curricula include material for every age, movement and Hebrew level.

We have posted these resources on the Judaism page of the organization Free the Slaves because of the extraordinary work they do each and every day to live up to their name. We hope that everyone who downloads our curricula will consider making a donation to Free the Slaves.

Faith in Action Ending Slavery « Free the Slaves The Torah instructs in Deuteronomy 24:18: “Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and that the Lord your God redeemed you from there. Therefore, I command you to do [justice].”

"Imagine if every child went to school understanding that he or she would receive praise for asking great questions—as opposed to receiving praise for getting correct answers. Think of how much more vibrant our classrooms would be."
