Schools are more than classrooms; they are lifelines for families.

American Paradigm Schools CEO Ashley Redfearn joined WURD Radio to speak about what's at stake for scholars, families, and communities across Philadelphia as Memphis Street Academy Charter School and other Philadelphia schools face ongoing challenges after the School Board ordered 17 school closures last week.

From the Wildcat Pantry to on-site health services, MSA provides critical support that extends well beyond academics. Ashley made it clear: the impact of potential closures reaches far deeper than test scores; it touches teacher retention, family stability, and the fabric of entire communities.

Thank you to WURD for spotlighting this important topic. Tune in to hear the full conversation:

Lindley Academy Charter School At Birney's 5th-grade class recently won a monetary grant that included a free student trip to the Horticulture Center, where scholars got hands-on with the natural world and brought their science lessons to life beyond the classroom.

Experiences like these remind our scholars that learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. We couldn't be happier for our Lindley 5th graders for earning this incredible opportunity!

Tacony Academy Charter School believes every student deserves a clear path to opportunity beyond graduation. That belief led to the creation of the Medical & Technical Skills Institute (MTSI), a career-readiness program offering hands-on training and industry-recognized certifications in high-demand fields.

Since launching in 2025, MTSI has already made an impact, with students earning certifications such as phlebotomy, and more programs are underway. As the institute grows, plans include expanding into technology and launching an FAA Part 107 Drone Certification program.

Support from our community makes this work possible. Your contribution helps sustain and grow MTSI, ensuring more students can access real-world opportunities and build pathways to success. The Philly School District illegally imposes conditions on charters, a group representing 70 of them says in lawsuit 05/15/2026

Philadelphia Charters for Excellence has raised concerns that certain charter renewal requirements unfairly pressure schools to accept enrollment caps and performance-based closure conditions in order to remain open.

This came as the Philadelphia Board of Education prepared to make recommendations on the renewal of 11 charter schools, including Lindley Academy Charter School At Birney, last night. Lindley CEO Dr. Margery Covello spoke with the Philadelphia Inquirer about the importance of accountability systems that recognize the unique needs of school communities while supporting student success.

In the article, Dr. Covello noted that Mayor Cherelle L. Parker’s office had “put their utmost trust in us,” selecting Lindley among a group of schools to pilot an extended-day, extended-year program.

“We would hope the school district and school board would put that same trust in us,” Dr. Covello said, adding that the school serves a vulnerable population. “That is not what we see happening. And that is what we are fighting against so hard tonight.”
