BioEYES of Pennsylvania received an educational endowment to engage students in Philadelphia! The Ralph and Elaine Redding Brinster High School Bioscience Outreach Fund supports BioEYES and prepares high school students to attend the annual Elaine Redding Brinster Prize in Science or Medicine.

This prize celebrates innovative biomedical science discoveries and students learn about the research being honored through classroom-based activities as well as lab tours and scientist Q&As at Penn.

The Brinster family embodies the spirit of inspiring the next generation of scientists and we are so thankful for their commitment to local students!

Teachers: Here's an interesting example of energy conservation and expenditure (aerobic/anaerobic) for zebrafish, with a sports analog!

From the article: "The team found that by swimming in schools, fish reduced the total energy they expended by up to 79% compared to solitary fish swimming at high speeds in turbulent water. Why? Because just as in a Tour de France peloton, the group formation protects individuals—in this case, from the force of whirlpools or eddies in the water.

The team's findings—the first study investigating the effects of turbulent flow on fish schools—appear in PLOS Biology."

Philadelphia high schoolers gather around newly donated mating tanks, from Aquaneering Inc., to make observations of breeding pairs of zebrafish on Day 1 of the BioEYES program. Mating tanks are an integral part of the week-long lab and we bring them in and out of schools on a weekly basis. A big thank you to Aquaneering for their generous donation.

Ms. Mitzel's seventh-grade Science class at Green Street has teamed up with Project Bioeyes for an intriguing project focused on zebrafish. These small tropical fish, originating from Southeast Asia, possess similarities to humans in terms of cell structure and DNA. Through this partnership, GSA scholars will explore these model organisms across their entire life cycle.
