Dr. Jordan has been a longtime member of the Dental Nachos community, joining us at Super Dentist Boost Camp and, most recently, at Dr. Todd Fleischman’s in-person course this August!

Your associate dentist has been working with you and your team for six months. You are the practice owner here.

Your associate works four days a week. M-W with you and Friday by themselves. You work Thursday by yourself. There are two hygienists working each day.

Your associate has GOOD (not great, but better than okay) clinical skills. Your associate has OKAY patient communication skills. This is an area or needed improvement. Your associate is a GOOD (not great, but better than okay) culture fit.

During the interview process, you interviewed five associates in person and two were ones that you wanted to hire. You went with your “gut” and hired this associate dentist.

Your adjusted production is $100,000/month as the owner. The associate’s adjusted production $40,000/month. The adjusted production from the hygiene department is $60,000. You are a PPO office and it would be impossible for you to do all of the restorative care without an associate. Your last associate worked with you for three years and averaged $50,000-$60,000/month in adjusted production. They left your office to pursue a career in high-level breakdancing.

The main problem is that your new associate is constantly running behind schedule. On Fridays, your team shares that they are often all “still there” 60 minutes past the end of the day waiting for the associate to finish and check the last hygiene patients. Patients have made a few complaints about waiting for appointments.

You have had three “check ins” about staying on time and you have offered training in dentisting multi-tasking and provide feedback consistently

When you are there together, it is common for you to have to check 4-5 of their hygiene patients due to them running behind schedule.

What would you do here?

1. Tell the team that the associate is still new to us and let’s just keep doing what we are doing. Buy them pizza on Fridays.
2. Show up yourself on Fridays and help check hygiene.
3. Look to replace this associate.
4. Something else
