When you think of Prep Soccer, you think of Jim Murray. He started the program and led it for 46 years. He retired as the second-winningest coach in PA history. He also served as a friend and mentor to generations of Prep Soccer players. A fixture at the games, even after he retired, no one loved the program more than Coach Murray.

Our thoughts and prayers to his family and to all who loved him. Enjoy a well-deserved reward in heaven Coach! May you rest in peace.

Coach Mac, Welcome to Prep Soccer!

St. Joseph’s Prep Athletic Director Dan DiBerardinis announces the hiring of John McIntyre as the school’s new head soccer coach.

“I am thrilled to have John join the Prep family as his passion and knowledge of the game are elite,” DiBerardinis says. “I look forward to seeing what he brings to our program in the years to come and how he will develop our student-athletes into the best versions of themselves.”

Coach McIntyre is Philly through and through. A native of Port Richmond, he played with Fishtown, Parkwood, and Danubia Soccer Club, where he won six state cups. He played high school ball at North Catholic, earning all-Catholic and all-state honors as the Falcons won the PCL Championship. He then went on to Saint Joseph’s University where he was the only player in program history to be a three-time, first-team, all-conference selection and a regional All-American in 1993. A member of the SJU Soccer Hall of Fame, he ranks third all-time with 27 career goals, while standing second in SJU history with 20 assists and 74 points. His 10 assists in 1993 are still a school single-season record. Following his Hawk career, he played professionally indoor for the Milwaukee Wave and Philadelphia Kixx of the MISL.

He has been coaching for more than 20 years at many area clubs including: Fishtown, Philly Soccer Club, Lighthouse, FC Bucks and Quaker Elite. Coach McIntrye is now very happy to be coaching at St. Joseph’s Prep and in the Philadelphia Catholic League. He knows what it takes to field a successful program in the PCL and how to build a program.

“My assistant coach Tim Comey is the one who encouraged me to apply for the position at the Prep,” Coach McIntyre said. “He said, ‘I’ve coached with you for 10 years and I see how you get the best out of the boys. The attitude that you bring is exactly what the Prep needs.’ I am incredibly excited to have gotten the position and to have this opportunity.”

“This is a very tough league, physicality wise,” he continued. “You need to have skill players of course but you also need to have physical players, kids with heart. It’s a grind. You have to find ways to win, especially in close games. Little details matter and making small adjustments. I think that I can bring that to the Prep.”

Coach McIntrye is the third coach in the history of our soccer program and he knows the importance of being a role model for our student-athletes as Coach Jim Murray and Joe Coyle were over the past 50 years.

“My coaches were always there for me,” Coach McIntrye said. “Whether in the classroom, on the soccer field, off the field. At St. Joe’s, Coach (Tom) Turner and Coach (Sam) Lee would always reach out to me to see how I was doing. They taught me a lot as a person, especially how important it is to give back to the kids and then they give back to other kids who look up to them and be role models in their community. I want our players to be disciplined and become outstanding men. You build a relationship with a kid, you can get everything out of them.

Coach McIntrye lives in Bensalem with his wife, Katie, and three daughters.

This note from Prep Athletic Director Dan DiBerardinis:

A huge thank you to Coach Joe Coyle for his tenure at the helm of our soccer program. Coach Coyle, who stepped down this week, brought unrivaled passion and love of the game. We are forever grateful for his dedication to instill that love and passion in our student-athletes.

Special edition tshirt for Coach ONeill that we will be selling at the alumni game on Sat at Lighthouse. Green for his proud Irish heritage, the flag for his military service, and “brotherhood” because that is what he instilled in us.
