For two years running, Natural Creativity has been proud to host the Youth Section of the Germantown Arts District Festival — and we hope to do it again this fall! 🍂✨

This is what community looks like: young people from our neighborhoods stepping into the spotlight, sharing their creativity, their voices, and their vision with the whole Germantown community. Not as an afterthought — as the heart of it.

We believe the young people of Germantown deserve to be seen, celebrated, and given space to CREATE. That’s what we do every day at NC — and the festival is one of our favorite ways to show up for this neighborhood we love. 🫶🏾

We believe learning happens everywhere — especially outside. 🌿

This year, we partnered with Forage to Fork to bring our young people into the Germantown neighborhood for hands-on foraging experiences — exploring our own streets and green spaces, meeting neighbors along the way, and deepening our understanding of indigenous foods and plant medicines that have always been part of this land.

This is what self-directed education looks like in practice: curious young people, trusted community partners, and real-world learning you can taste.

At Natural Creativity, our lightly structured summer camp gives young people ages 4–12 the space to explore, create, and just be — in a safe, welcoming environment right here in Germantown.

Last week, Treehouse Music Studios brought an open mic to our community hall — piano, guitar, saxophone, vocals, performers of all ages. Someone said it best afterward:

“The experience of this open mic within this sacred space was everything. They made everyone feel comfortable and safe enough to express their true authentic selves.”

🐆 Meet the Ocelots!

Ages 5–8 | Self-directed learning | Germantown, Philadelphia

The Ocelots are our youngest group— and they chose their name themselves. After 3+ weeks of brainstorming, voting, and deliberating, they landed on Ocelots. The reason? Baby ocelots are adorable. 🐾

Their days are built around two big ideas: learning about themselves and learning how to be in community. That looks like emotional literacy, group problem-solving, reading together, and practicing empathy — all in a space designed just for them.

Current obsessions include: clay, Spot It, dinosaurs, Ocelot-only D&D, science experiments, jewelry making, the 3D printer, and spy play. 🔬💍🎲

Facilitated by Sara and Shane, who bring deep interests in education, social justice, math, and the arts.

Camp Creativity is a low-demand, self-directed summer for young people ages 4–12. The agenda? Co-created by the campers themselves. Cook something. Make art. Play D&D. Head to the park. Follow what actually interests you.

Perfect for school families who want something genuinely different this summer.

Axolotls: not little kids, not teens. 🦎

Funny, loud, awkward, thoughtful — and exactly where they need to be.

This group (ages 9–13) is in the thick of figuring things out — friendships, themselves, what they actually care about. At NC, they get space to try things and fail and try again, with people who take them seriously.

A day in Axolotls might include cooking, SpInSAT (Special Interest Show & Tell), a group game, clay, someone randomly doing robotics, and a lot of good conversation. Social time isn’t separate from learning here — it IS the learning.

NARWHALS = Nearly Adult Really Weird Human Animals Learning Stuff. 🐋

That’s what this group named themselves back in 2019 — and it still fits. This year, we had 20 teens at our peak. Our teens (ages 13–18) spend their days at NC doing what they actually want: independent projects, co-working, trips around the city, checking out community college classes, and showing up for the people in their community.

No bells. No assigned seats. Biweekly check-ins with a facilitator who actually knows them. And their own room.

Teens want to be around more teens — and at NC, they are. We have a few spots open for 2026–27. If you have a self-directed teen who’s ready for something new, send them our way.
