Great reason to teach “stay”.... photshoots! 😄

It's interesting how similar it can be training horses vs. dogs. One of my favorite exercises, "Approach and Retreat" works wonders whether the animal is afraid, excited or just generally reactive.

Creating more distance between you and the "object" helps your dog or horse recover emotionally. As you approach and your animal seems stressed, retreat again. As you keep repeating this approach and retreat, the animal gradually becomes desensitized to whatever is creating the stress. You might get only inches or feet closer in any given session or you might be able to approach all of the way. It may take minutes, hours, days or weeks, depending on the level of stress.
Examples: a horse, afraid to load into a trailer, or a dog, excited to see their friends at the park.

I get to help out with some wonderful foster dogs from Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue. These are amazing dogs that just need another chance at finding the right family. I've made a few videos about some of them and the games and exercises that we work on together. Welcome Gunner and Ollie!

Working on getting a longer “Stay”, starring Ollie Ollie gets very excited playing treat or toy games, so e we like to break things up with working on short stays.

Not only do we train horses and do farm sitting, but we also train dogs! We do Private or Group Classes (In-person or Virtual) and also have a special "Walk and Train" program, where we come and pick up your pup and take them on a special walk in a local park where they can explore new sights and smells, climb over obstacles, possibly wade through water, and practice their basic manners and leash skills.
