Flood Extent in South Punjab!

The latest high-resolution satellite image shows how floods have spread across South Punjab along the Sutlej–Chenab–Indus corridor, covering areas between Jalalpur Pirwala, Alipur, Uch Sharif, and Taranda Muhammad Panah.

Heavy monsoon rains and upstream water releases have pushed rivers to historic highs, submerging villages, farmland, and roads. Millions in Punjab have been displaced or forced to evacuate, while floodwaters now move downstream toward Sindh.

Floods in Pakistan 2025: Okara Under Water

Okara, my home district, is facing devastating floods this season, with the Sutlej overflowing on the east and the Ravi on the west.

Utilizing my remote sensing and geospatial analysis skills, I employed the UN-SPIDER (United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response) flood mapping approach, which utilizes Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from Sentinel-1 satellites. Unlike optical sensors, SAR can pe*****te clouds and detect flood conditions even during monsoon weather.

From the most recent Sentinel-1 pass, the analysis shows that over 100,000 acres in Okara are affected by flooding, with a significant portion covering cropland. This not only represents immediate hardship for communities but also poses a major challenge for food production and recovery in the coming months.

The imagery of the Sulemanki area illustrates how wide the flood swath has become, highlighting the scale of the disaster and the urgency of relief and preparedness.

To support decision-makers, I have also developed an Interactive Flood Mapping Application. It allows users to select any Province, Division, or District, define analysis periods, and instantly estimate flooded area, affected cropland, and exposed population.
