Happy to take the No. 1 New York City subway from Penn Station uptown to 79th and Broadway to see my first student from Manhattan for the last time to celebrate her college decision!
She had many good options for college and decided to land in Nashville!
Despite having most of our meetings virtually, she proudly wrote about her thriving cork business in her college essay!
I am going to miss being greeted by her mother who ALWAYS had an assortment of cookies and other treats ready for me after heading up to the 15th floor!

SELF-DEPRECATION: modesty about or criticism of oneself- is a powerful tool BOTH in politics AND in college essays.
From Sen. Raphael Warnock, (D, South Carolina) on Meet the Press to former President Obama to Joe Biden, himself, each has admitted to gaffes in previous speeches.
Same for college essays, whether "being cut and failing to make a team" or acknowledging "initial struggles with public speaking" SELF-DEPRECATION is refreshing to read in some of my students' college essays.
