Gaku and Fuyu, representing Japan from our after-school program, had an unforgettable 3-day journey in Miami at the MLB STEM League Global Championship. For these baseball-loving boys, it truly became a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Right after arriving, they joined a welcome dinner and met students from around the world. They all go on to share an intense and meaningful 2 days together!
The next morning, they competed in Day 1 of the board game qualifiers at FIU. At times, they struggled to express what they had to say in English, which left them feeling frustrated. However, that very challenge became the most valuable part of their experience. They realized firsthand that communication requires English, and that it’s important to clearly express their own thoughts. It was something they could truly understand only by stepping outside of Japan. Carrying that lesson with them, they came back stronger on Day 2 - this time preparing and using English phrases to express themselves more clearly. Although they did not advance to the finals, they gained something far more important.
They connected with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, experienced the vibrant atmosphere of the FIU campus lined with palm trees, watched players compete on the grand stage of the World Baseball Classic, and even had the chance to interact directly with Houston Astros player during a Spring Training game!
Most importantly, these two—who may never have met without this board game—came together as teammates and built a strong bond through this experience. It was a short but truly magical three-day journey.

弊社放課後プログラムから日本代表としてマイアミでの世界大会に出場したGaku&Fuyuの野球少年ペアの３日間の体験は、きっと彼らの一生涯のかけがえとない思い出となる旅でした！
到着後すぐに他の国や地域から集まった生徒たちと顔合わせディナー。24人の生徒たちは、濃い２日間を共に過ごすことになります。
さっそく翌日の朝にはFIU（フロリダ国際大学）でのボードゲーム予選Day1。対戦チームに伝えたいことを英語で伝えられずに、悔しい思いもしました。しかし、その気づきこそ、今回の旅の一番の糧だったと思います。コミュニケーションをとるためには英語が必要なこと、はっきりと主張しないと伝わらないこと、日本から外に出て初めて、文化の違いを身をもって体験しました。
悔しさを胸に、次の日のDay２予選では、主張したい時はどう言ったら良いか？を英語で覚えて挑みました。残念ながら決勝には進出できませんでしたが、それより多くのことを学ぶことができました。
各地から参加した色々な文化のバックグラウンドをもつ生徒たちとの交流。ヤシの木の並ぶFIUの大きなキャンパスで体感したダイナミックなアメリカ。WBCの大きな舞台で活躍する選手たちを観て、さらにSpring Trainingゲームでアストロズの選手と直接交流ができました。ボツになったようですが、日本のTV局の記者さんとの偶然の出会いがあり、取材された一面も。
そして、このボードゲームプログラムなかったら知り合うことのなかっただろう二人が、チームメイトとして行動し、結束を深めました。
