Because the ADHD After-School Crash Is REAL. Here are some things that may happen and what works in our house.
Your child walks through the door after holding it together all day… and suddenly everything falls apart.
Meltdowns-We don't offer space for that. No chores, no grade or behavior talks. Get home, get the snack, turn off their brain for 15-30 minutes
Irritability-See above. Irritable is natural, punishing the room isn't. Grab a book, a craft, a tv, a game. See you in 30.
“I’m starving!”-We do dinner when we get home, snack when other's do dinner. Make it protein heavy and avoid the sugars and dyes.
Total exhaustion-Girl, same.
It’s not always defiance or laziness. For many kids with ADHD, school requires an enormous amount of energy spent managing attention, impulses, emotions, transitions, and expectations.
By the time they get home, their brain may simply be done.
A little decompression time, food (think protein protein PROTEIN), movement, and connection before jumping into homework can make a HUGE difference.
Sometimes the best thing you can do after school isn't push harder—it's give their brain a chance to reset.
