It's September and your kid doesn't look like the same player they were in July.

Nothing about their ability changed in six weeks.

Summer had no scoreboard. Nobody deciding who starts Friday. Now every rep is being watched — and that changes what they're playing for.

They stop playing to make something happen and start playing to not screw up.

You see it as tentative. A half-second late. Passing up the shot they'd take in practice all day.

Same kid. Different player.

And it's not just the coach. It's the question running in the back of their head all game — am I good enough? When that rides on every touch, of course they play tight.

Try this tonight.

Skip "how'd you play?" on the ride home. That asks them to grade themselves, and trust me, they grade hard.

Ask "did you try something new today?"

Now trying is the win, not the result. Do that for a couple weeks and watch what they start attempting in games.

This is the practice-to-game gap. More reps won't fix it.

Sound like your kid? Comment GAP and I'll tell you what's really going on.

Confidence is trained. Leadership is trained. Same as speed, same as strength.

Every athlete I work with has been coached on their footwork, their film, their strength numbers. Almost none of them have been coached on how to steady a teammate, hold a standard, or come back from a mistake without spiraling.

I’ve never met an athlete who couldn’t learn this stuff. I’ve met plenty who were never taught it.

I work with athletes 1 on 1 on exactly this. If you’ve got a kid who has the talent and not the belief yet, send me a message and we’ll talk about whether it’s a fit.

What’s the one job your athlete’s taking into tryouts this week? Tell me below 👇

Tryout week doesn’t create the pressure. It just turns the volume up on what was already there.

If your athlete performs in practice and disappears when it counts, that gap isn’t a skill problem. It’s a mental one, and it’s fixable.

Give them one controllable job this week. Watch what happens.

We train strength. Speed. Skill. Recovery.

So why is training confidence, focus, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure treated any differently?

Mental performance isn’t just for athletes who are struggling.

It’s part of becoming a better athlete.

Train the body. Train the game. Train the mind.

Ready to work on the mental side of your game? Send me a message.

8 years ago, I started South Shore Sport Psych.

For a long time, I was almost afraid to really go for it—to trust myself, invest in the business, and see what it could become.

Not anymore.

I’m building something that helps athletes get to the next level—not just physically, but mentally—and helps injured athletes return to play with confidence.

There’s a LOT coming, and I’m excited to finally go all in.

Follow along as we build.
