Did you know safety and survival isn't just for the woods, forests, and hiking trails? π²+π+π+π½
As an islander, I grew up learning most of my survival skills for desert and beach environments so there are many topics we could go over. For now, we're going to start with 4 things to know when hitting the sand and sea.π
1. Orient yourself.
πThe ocean can be a silent sweeper. While you or your child are splashing, swimming, and snorkeling in the sea, the current can pull you apart and down the shoreline before you realize it. This can leave a child or adult disoriented and nowhere near their original location.
2. Stay hydrated.
π¦ It seems obvious, but I've seen it time and time again. People are fooled by the ocean breeze and being cooled off in the water, then end up dehydrated and feeling ill. Set a timer and make sure everyone rehydrates.
3. Study up on marine life
π¦ You don't need to be a marine biologist, but understanding what marine life is in season, what could be harmful, and how to protect your family is important. Look at pictures together, learn, and make it fun! (no fear)
4. Stay aware and eliminate distractions.
π±π It can be easy to be swept away in a good book or podcast at the sight and sound of those waves, but it's not wise. Be alert to who you're setting up around and keep a direct line of sight to your kids. Beaches can get crowded!
We hope you enjoyed these safety tips for your day in the sand and sea! Follow along for more tips to help you and your family!
